The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2004) Movie Analysis

Section 1: Nature & Nurture

Benjamin born with the characteristic of the old adult rather than baby making him
different from the firstborn child. He grew like a child in Oldman body as it can be seen
that he still play fork on the table and his mother tell to stop because it causes loud
noise and other evidence is when he was going to sleep it can be shown that his
adoptive mother kissed him before he closes his eye. Most of the time people mistake
Benjamin as an old man that lives in the nursing house but not many people know
Benjamin is a child. Even though he was not well educated because he didnt attend
school but he was able to communicate with others because he lived in social, it might
come from the action from his adoptive parent or the resident of the nursing house. The
example might be that he sees the old people that lived in the nursing house talk with
each other during the night.

The environment that he has grown based on his adoptive parent separate into an
individual. His adoptive mother, Queenie Weathers, can be seen in between
Authoritative and Permissive because in the movie She deeply cared for him but
sometimes might scold him like when he plays spoon and fork when he was youth .
While his adoptive mother was kind to him, his adoptive father, Tizzy Weathers, was
uninvolved with Benjamin. Rather than see Benjamin as his adoptive son, he sees him
at first unique but as time pass he sees Benjamin as a friend for an unknown reason.
He cares little about Benjamin like when he says to Benjamin to go back home first
because he has a meeting with the tall women. For his real father, Thomas Button, like
his adoptive father but far crueler than his adoptive father because he abandoned
Benjamin
after his wifes death but as Benjamin enter the state of Early adulthood he began to
care for him again as he began to die because of terminal illness.

Benjamin, based on the environment that he was born, his baby form looked like an old
man so when he was still a baby so he used most of his time sit in wheelchair and didnt
how to crawl or walk but childlike behavior finger sucker can be seen in the scene in
dinner tale when he was child. He learned how to walk when he was seven years old by
himself when the priest encourages him to walk by himself without any help showing
that his walking ability come from self-experience and other experience can be seen the
scene him in the wheelchair to climb the stair. Most of his experience that involve with
being teaching by someone can be the scene when he learned how to play piano by the
resident of the nursing house. Also about his idea that he was growing up, he has
learned many things from many types of people like when he has a talk with his
adoptive father about his experience of losing his friend.

Section 2: Understanding about Genders and Conformity

At first, Benjamin has no any understanding of the opposite gender( female ) until he
meets with Captain Mike. Captain Mike confuse that Benjamin doesn't have a wife (
Because he thinks that Benjamin is an old man that lives for a long time) and so he
picks him to the pub. This event turns over Benjamins perspective on the women and
also the first time that he experiences the sexual activity with the opposite gender as it
can be seen during his time go to the pub. Also when he was rest at the Russian Hotel,
he and the woman named Elizabeth Abbot, at first like sharing their past with each other
but as time pass, They began to have sexual activity every day. It can be shown that he
thinks that woman is equal to men but still have a reason for what he doing as he
rejects Daisy about sexual activity as she was in a drunk state.

Benjamins conformity ( group thinking ) began to be seen when he was a child.

Someone other than the nursing house dont know about Benjamin unique growth so
he quietly keep it secret to the outsider ( except someone who was in the church )
because if he say it anyone he might get untreated or confused and his look as an old
man makes him think that he was old man but age like a child as it can be seen that he
like to used his time with the old people in his house because he might think they are
the same as him. During the World War II Benjamin participate in the war because he
sees his fellow crew apply for it even though they didnt force everyone to involved or
fight in the war. Also when he began to drink liquor with his real dad for the first time, he
thinks that everyone like drinks it as he was in the pub so he drinks it.

Section 3: Adulthood, Old Age, and Death

Benjamin began to seek independence around the time when his adoptive mother,
Queenie, born her first daughter. During this period, he seeks a job until he meets with
Captain Mike, who look for someone to be his sailor, which Benjamin accept the job as
a sailor. After that, he left the nursing house for the trip around the world for a decade.
During his trip, He began to enter the early-middle adulthood during his time in Russia.
He forms a relationship with Elizabeth Abbot, who already have a husband, during his
time at the hotel. After the war, He married Daisy Fuller and bore one daughter, Julia.
Benjamin becomes middle adulthood after Julia was born but knowing that he has
abnormality body, he left his family out for this reason. He later enters Late adulthood
after he was turned into kid but unfortunately even though his body is a kid but that
doesnt mean he is healthy. Benjamins memories were wiped out due to his brain
problem after he was turned into a kid. His life as Benjamin Button ended after his
latest and last meeting with Daisy at her ballet school. The rest of his life as grandpa in
kid body was care by his wife until his last breath as a baby.

Benjamins griefness began when he began to think about his death. He at first
denial about his death as baby when Daisy bored his daughter in her womb and his
anger is when he knowing that he began to become younger and because of this had
lead to Bargaining state and Depression State. Bargaining stage of Benjamin when he
plan to do something new before he left his house as it seen that he had left the letter
before he left the house. He enter depression stage when he left his family because of
his abnormality body as it can seen that he left his house after his daughter enter the
school. His acceptance was when last meet with Daisy in teenages body because he
know that he began to died. Daisy at first denial about him died as a baby during their
honeymoon because she think that it just joke but as time pass she notice him to be
younger. Her anger state can be seen when she have argument with Benjamin before
he left her at the restaurant and later on the state of Bargaining she used her last
chance to be with Benjamin, who lost his memories. Her depression state can be seen
that her husband cannot remember her because of the illness. She accept his dead
when he remember her as a baby before he died.
