Nowadays, work of literary is one of the most attractive art. In modernism, one of the poet who has

been popular until today, William Carlos Williams. He is an expert in two different ways which are

art and medical. Even though he started to write since he was young, he graduated Master Degree of

Doctor from University of Pennsylvania. His style of writing is imagist. In Complaint and To a

Poor Old Woman William Carlos Williams explore emotion of happiness.

William Carlos Williams explores emotion of happiness in Complaint and To a Poor Old

Woman by moments of joy and happiness. In the poem Complaint,Williams capture emotion of

happiness by moment of giving tenth birth. One day after midnight, someone calling the doctor and

he decided to go out. His destination is to visit great pregnant woman. He arrived the patients

house even the weather outside is too cold. He saw a woman who really suffering from giving birth

to the tenth child. In the text it says To give birth to / a tenth child. Joy! Joy! / Night is a room /

darkened for lovers, / through the jalousies the sun / has sent one golden needle! (14-19). It is

obvious that narrator emphasize emotion of happiness through a moment of giving birth of the

woman. He depicts happiness through the word Joy to represent happiness of people who really

congrats after a child was born. Nonetheless, he also implies that even the woman had been

suffering from giving birth, happiness can happen. In addition, Williams poem To a Poor Old

Woman also expresses happiness by using moment of eating plums. To a Poor Old Woman was

published in 1925. The old woman walks along the street. She opens a paper bag for get a plums

Williams emphasize her happiness by sucked out in her hand(11). It is obvious that she is giving

her self as much as possible. Moreover, a plums also taste good to her. Williams keeps writing

that sentence five times so, it could be interpreted that while she is munching those plums, she

enjoys to eat it.

Williams uses repetition as a literary device to emphasize emotion of happiness in

Complaint and To a Poor Old Woman. As a modernist poet, Williams uses variety kinds of

literary device such as repetition to wrote a poem. In the poem Complaint, he begins with depict

situation of one doctor, who went to pregnant womans house after midnight. The poem also

includes the moment of giving birth of the woman. Furthermore, in To a Poor Old Woman, the

old woman reveals in eating plum while walking along the street. By describing emotion of

happiness in Complaint. It says, Joy! Joy!(15). He expresses the moment of enjoyment by

repeating the word Joy. By doing so, meaning of Joy represents happiness and repetition make

the emotion more strengthen. Moving on To a Poor Old Woman, the use of They taste good to

her / They taste good to her / They taste good to her (4-7) especially describes how those plums

affect her emotion of happiness. It could be interpreted that a reason of using repetition as a literary

device to represent images of happiness during action of both poem. Williams ultimately presents

happiness as clear as possible.

William Carlos Williams reveals emotion of happiness through action in two different

poem. He captures happiness through an action of each poem. Furthermore, he also uses repetition

as literary device for both poem. When human is feeling happy, it doesnt depends on how

significant of that situation. It can be crucial event or simple event that occur in our routine so, it

Reflection

According to Literary Analysis project, process of the poem What a nice day was inspired

by William Carlos Williams. Theme of the poem are in contrast and surprising in final line which is

based on Complete Destruction. Looking more closely, main idea of the poem are about main

character spend 6 months of practicing SAT everyday; however, on the exam day, she forget to

bring her identity card to the test centre. Im also run the poem without any punctuation and

separate it in to five equal stanza. Moreover, in each line are shorts and describe in clear expression

ways. All of the words are simple and easy to understand. By the way, In Williams poem , he

didnt express emotion of main character by describe it but, revels it through action or setting so,

Im trying to capture emotion of disappointment of main character through her action. The reason is

to make an audience understand emotion of main character without describing any emotion.

Moreover, Im also use assonance as literature device Wind through the windows / Sunshine over

the rainbow(3-4). The words windows and rainbow are o sound. SAT exam today / I am

practicing it everyday / Waiting for 6th may(5-7), it is obvious that used of the words today ,

everyday and may are in a sound. Furthermore, Im also uses the tittle as a first line of the

poem which is inspired by To a Poor Old Woman. Lastly, my purpose is to shared my

experienced during SAT exam by using Williams style. In addition, My experienced after studying

Williams as a mentor, the facts that really surprise me is his main career is doctor. He are expert in

both medical and art. His technique to express emotion through action or setting of character make

me enjoy the most. The reason is he can explore the emotion clearly without any word related to

that emotion. In my opinion, emotion of the main character is necessary to include in the poem

because it will appeals emotion of audience. Moreover, Im also noticed that Williams use

repetition as a literature device to emphasize essential points in each poem. In conclusion, Williams

influenced me in term of growth mind set. He can proved to everyone about his ability. Even

through he is an expert in medical ways, he can be the good poet as well.
