As a Shamanic Practitioner Im often asked to recommend substances that get you high
(which is slang for enteringnon-ordinary states of consciousness)legally.
While I encourage people to carefully and mindfully explore the recesses of their minds,
unfortunately there are many websites out there that advocate the use of legal
psychedelics such as nutmeg, datura and morning glory seeds which all have dangerous
side effects and even deadly consequences.
Its this type of misguidance that has lead to so many bad experiences, accidents and such a
negative outlook on psychedelicdrugsin society, as though all mind-altering substances

However, there is a group of entheogens known as Oneirogens (from the Greek oneiros
meaning dream and gen meaning creating), which produce and also enhance dream-
like states of consciousness. These herbs and roots have been used for thousands of years
for prophetic divination through dreams, out-of-body experiences, and to consciously
awaken you during dream states (Lucid Dreaming (https://lonerwolf.com/lucid-
dreaming/)).
Oneirogens represent only one specific class of entheogens that can be exclusively used for
lucid dreaming, but there are many other types and classes of entheogens that can be used
for other specific life purposes. I will expand on these other substances in future articles.
The following legal psychedelics can be safely consumed having minimal effect on waking
consciousness, and will only exhibit their effects when you fall into a natural state of sleep.

Calea is perhaps the best known of all Dream herbs. The Chontal Indians of Mexico used
this shrub traditionally for lucid dreaming. I personally prefer growing mine as the fresher
the herb is, the better. Calea can be consumed in tea (the flavor is pungent and bitter) or by
smoking the dried leaves. A combination of smoking and drinking an infusion of the herb
before bed, setting intention and focusing on ones heartbeat creates the ideal conditions
for dream-time spiritual journeying.
Effects: Apart from the intensification of visual imagery during sleep, you may find yourself
feeling a sense of well-being, light-headedness and clarity the day after.
Use:Taking at least five grams of this herb is required to be really effective for most people.
Drink the herb before bed, keep an intent in mind before falling asleep (e.g. I want to meet

nights until lucid dreaming occurs.

Mugwort has long been used by many cultures for prophetic dreaming and astral traveling
(its Paiute name translates literally to Dream Plant). Smoking the herb directly into the
lungs, or burning it as incense in the afternoon, assists with lucid dreaming. Drinking the
calming, liver cleansing tea before sleep may also keep you longer in a conscious dream
state (REM sleep). This herb often helps one heal while dreaming. Some users report having
darker dreams that reveal hidden insights and core wounds, helping them to find closure.

Caution: Avoid this herb if you are pregnant. Mugwort relaxes the uterus in women and
should never be drunk, smoked or even touched by expectant mothers. Mugwort is also

This plant was called Sinicuichi (or Sun Opener) by the Aztecs and is still used by Mexican
shamans as a trance divination catalyst. This herb is regarded as sacred in that it enables
vivid recollection of past distant events. Some users I have worked with have even reported
the remembrance of pre-birth events!
Effects: Apart from the intensification of prophetic visual imagery during sleep, Sun Opener
causes a yellowing of the vision and altered acoustic perception.
Use:Traditionally, fresh leaves are collected and allowed to wilt. The leaves are then put
into a cup or jar, cool water is added, and the mixture is placed in the sun to brew and

Altering one's brain with chemicals, as herbs are, albeit "natural" is a risky thing to do. I don't think anything
worthwhile, lasting, or significant, is accessed via any drug pathway. It may mimic certain states but I can't
consider them valid. Drugs can, however, rearrange things better left as they are.

To me, these sacred substances are wonderful gateways to experience altered states. For many
people, altered states are just a passing concept, not an experiential reality.
There's so many people who were logical and cynical to anything metaphysical that it was only after
trying a sacred substance or having a herb-induced experienced that they become committed on their
path to recreating these experiences in their daily life without the use of any medicine.
Outside of that, there's also the value of using it under the guidance of a training practitioner or
shaman who knows the in's and out's of it and can provide amazing psychological breakthroughs as
is well documented with the Ayahuasca treatments in South America.

As you mentioned a caution with Mugwort, I drank it in tea for three nights and found it to be a delicious brew.
However on the third morning I woke up to severe mouth ulcers and a very swollen tongue. The next day my
lips blistered, although I'm not a traffic stopper, I can say I have had much better looks. I have fortunately
never suffered from depression, but it did alter my mental state, and I was quite tearful until it worked its way
out of my system. That said, maybe it's just me.

Lucid dreaming and working with dreams and visions and spiritual messages in general is great. But trust me,
astral stuff not so much, a whole different ballgame, incomparable. There is a lot of very harmful
misconception and false information about the astral.

Only young naive people seeks drugs in order to experience something, untill they find themself getting
affected for life, i have tried nothing more than weed and alchohol, believe me, weed was enough, and in
hindsight, as i was ill already, it was not a good idea developing an addiction in an age of 17-18. But this gets
too much for me, a bit over the top. Life is also about experiencing life normally without drugs, im not on this
wagon, not after ive burned my brain on it and developed long term paranoier..

Dear Mateo, Hello from New Jersey, USA! Thank you for sharing this
information! I always wanted the ability to have more deep, meaningful
dreams or somehow get more in touch with my whole spirit so that I might
be able to use this knowledge to better help my conscious mind and
better benefit my life altogether. I have done a lot of research on the
use of natural herbs that may help accomplish this that wont harm my
body and are good and legal dont need any trouble, hahaha! I have also
researched about the many spiritual benefits of
divine ayahuasca, but where I live here, I dont know of a shaman and I am
afraid of trying it on my own
as this is not recommended. Also (a bit off subject), I rely on the
help of public assistance with medical and financial resources because I
am schizophrenic and have been out of the workforce for about 7 years.
I would love to be able to find natural herb(s) to help me to relieve

Im a natural dreamer as well but I started having trouble remembering them.

You do not, repeat do not have to smoke or drink mug wort . I simply put in an
ashtray and burn it. Smoking it makes ME dizzy but that just me. I found that
your dreams are on a reel non stop and it seems as if your woke but you are
definitely sleeping. I woke up feeling well rested.

Firstly, thank you very much for this informative post. I look forward to
experimenting with some of these in the right time. So far the only one I have
tried is Silene Capensis. The first and second time I tried it, there was not
much of a noticeable effect, as I did not recall my dreams. However on the
third attempt, (and after having not smoked marijuana for about a week) the

first time I recall thinking in a dream, and being aware of the fact that I was
thinking. Only the when I awoke did I find it interesting that I was able to
notice my thinking while asleep, something which doesnt happen to me.
Anyways, I surely plan on trying it again, though this time, with a direct intent
or question in mind before going to bed.
Also, Based on my research I mixed a tablespoon of the ground powder with
about 2-3 cups of water, shook it, and ate the bubbles at the surface. Would
drinking the liquid be even more effective?

I personally wouldnt recommend mixing them. Each has their own

personality and effects on you, when you mix them youre creating a
disharmony within your body as it will be too concerned dealing with
such a mix to provide you with enjoyable lucid dreams.
Besides, what would be the point? With these sacred plants quantity
consumed does not equal greater quality , if anything Ive learned the
opposite is true.

Thank you Sol for providing this info. Ive been researching PTSD and night
terrors for years now and today I was brought to your site. Ill spend more time
exploring here for sure, but for now I was wondering if you could speak to the
role these herbs may play in the management of the night terrors. My father
(and mother) have suffered every night for 30 plus years. He is exhausted with
psychiatry and pharmaceuticals. He currently has an MD that is supportive to
his search for herbal relief so he is not out there exploring alone.

Thank you for your comment. These herbs are aimed at lucid
dreaming. In your parents night terrors case, I believe there could be
some traumatic event or core wound that is waiting to be explored and
processed.
Lucid dreaming with herbs offers no particular guide for that,

something like Soul Retrieval or other forms of depth exploratory
psychology would help much more.

redundant? I want to make a tea/smoke combo with a few of them, but if some

I have worked with Mugwort and Tian Men Dong to augment lucid and
initiatory dreaming experiences, so far, so-so results. I am interested in
growing the experience. I have noticed that with the Tian Men Dong there is
the aparagus racemosus, (Shatavari) which is promoted as an herb for
hormonal balance for women, and then there is another Tian Men Dong
asparagus cochinchinensis, which is promoted as supporting lung issues. I am
having trouble distinguishing which is best for lucid dreaming? Thanks

In my experience Racemosus is a better fit for lucid dreaming though

both are pretty effective. Theres a few things you can also experiment
with such as room temperature (colder the better) and also alternative
sleeping cycles.

Ayahuasca is a dear friend to me but I dont like encouraging the use

of these sacred plants lightly as they demand great experience and
guidance. Ill look into writing an article on awareness toward the
benefits of many of these substances when used in the right way.

Thank you for the article. Very interesting thoughts. I was diagnosed with a
seizure disorder at age 17 and when they medicated me, which I have now been
for 25 years, my dreams became difficult to discern. Prior to being medicated I
dreamt constantly and had my first astral projection experience at 13. I had
begun learning meditation or rather relaxation techniques during my second
grade school year. This helped me come to be able to relax and remember my
dreams while in between REM sleep and wakefulness. I have missed being able
to remember dreams and it causes tremendous anxiety issues. I dream to deal
with issues and yet I cant remember them and dont seem to heal emotionally.
I feel as if my medication I take keeps me from being able to do this. My sister
says if I cant dream and remember then I cant file. Filing being working
through my issues during these times I would lucid dream. Very frustrating and
damaging.

I know theres a few herb shops that sell some of them (here in
Australia, Happy Herbs is a good place to start), but you can also
purchase larger quantities of these dried herbs on eBay from reputable
growers.

Thanks so much, Mateo, for the info about these herbs. I saw a movie, (and
read the book) entitled The Emerald Forest.Is is a true story about a boy who
was lost and taken in by the Invisible People tribe of the Amazon.He grew up
and thrived in the Amazon with the Invisible People tribe.They used herbs
for journeys and other occasions. It is a wonderful, true story and it was
amazing to see the actual Amazon forest where it was filmed. Those people
there know so much about the use of herbal substances in the Amazon.

film now.
Im aware that much of the fairy folklore of Europe was based on

similar stories of children describing abductions by fairy creatures
into a realm where time didnt exist. Maybe its a universal archetypal
story?

book I think it was made in the 1990s, but the book and
movie are probably still available on Amazon or eBay. I
bought the book as a used book, and the DVD also.

they were rescuing Tommy from those who were destroying
the Amazon. They called them the Termite People, because
they cut down so many trees in the forest and cleared the
forests.
I hope that you can find the DVD and/or book (perhaps on
Amazon or eBay)It is actually a true story, and sometimes I
have to wonder about the amazing wishes of the people of the
Amazon and how everything actually came to be. It is an
amazing and true story, and also very, very spiritual.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Lucid dreams has played a huge role in my life and I would really like if you
guys could explain why or how this happens naturally. Also I want to
experiment some herbs to explore my dreams but I have moderate anxiety and
I am very cautious about what I take. Can you tell me if this is a treat for

In my experience trying these herbs and prescribing them to some of

our students, I havent seen any of them react to taking them with
anxiety; on the contrary, most of them (especially Blue Lotus) actually
calmed them down significantly.
Anxiety is the signal of your mind that something is wrong, blocked

and needs your attention. Exploring this blockage through lucid
dreams or shamanic rituals with psychedelics can offer terrific
opportunities to unblock those core emotional wounds and integrate
those fragmented parts.

I love Calea Zacatechichi, but I wasnt aware that the freshness played such a
role! Im certainly going to get some seeds now and those other species for
next spring :) Are there any that would be alright to grow indoors during the
winter?

Hola Amanda,
Generally most of these plants are from tropical or really hot climates
so I wouldnt recommend growing any indoors unless you have a
hydroponic setup. Freshness is essential in most of the substances I
use for healing as the live energies start fading over time.

You can certainly try, but I find its most effective

with a proper extraction method; in this case, the

and which should not be touched. They harvested some and froze it
with orange juice. He then drove it back to VA. The evening a few of us
got together, and proceeded to do shots of the mixture. It was
needless to say an extremely interesting evening and actually I went
to sleep, interesting dreams and work up still under the influence. It
was one of many memories I still smile about to this day. -Peter

Well Ive actually had quite a few experiences with the illegal types as they
were very available during my high school and college years. Although I dont
know if I would recommend it to everyone, I certainly enjoyed the experience
and feel quite expanded from it. I have no ill effects from that time, except Im
still alive;-)

The illegal varieties are terrific for psycho-spiritual work though I

cant really recommend them lightly as without proper guidance it
often ends up just turning into an entertaining colorful experience
rather than reaching much depth.
