The Waiting Game
After a busy week and with limited time on the bank over that last
month or so, I loaded the van and headed to prestigious Farlows
Lake. Setting off a little later than anticipated, I arrived at Farlows.
However, I was lucky enough to secure a double peg on Lake 1 for
the weekend ahead and our social, so I was well happy. As I waited
for Richard to arrive, I got the marker rod set up and flicked the
lead out to try and find some clear areas in the hope of introducing
a few spods full of bait and hopefully tempting some carp.
After several casts, it soon became apparent that straight out in
front of me on my side of the peg was a sizeable area that was
gravel, and this screamed carp. Finding an area perfect for
presenting a single bait, I decided that this would be my starting
point. After clipping up the marker rod, it was a simple case of
getting the carp rods wrapped around the distance sticks and
clipped up. Armed with three rods, I opted to present two of my
three rods on the gravel area, fished roughly 6ft apart with a spread
of bait. As the peg commanded a large expanse of water and an
island to my left, it would be foolish of me not to stick a rod on it.
After several casts, I placed a rig tight under an overhanging willow
tree, and with five or six mouthfuls of boilies over the area it was was pumping into our swim. The weather warmed and seemed to

Martin and Rob would like to welcome you to Villereal Carp Fishery which gets its
name from its location just outside the picturesque bastide town of Villereal, in the
heart of sunny south-western France. The 7-acre lake is a true hidden treasure
with a beautiful stock of carp into the mid-sixties. Up to six anglers can be
accommodated on a choice of nine swims, of which four are doubles and one
being suitable for differently-abled anglers.
The lake is fully private and secure, with a driveable path allowing you to
load/unload your tackle on each swim.

In 2014 another several 20-30lb carp
were introduced and also two carp at over
50lb. One of these carp is now over 60lb and there are several 50lb fish.
On an average week you can expect to see plenty of mid-high twenties, a
good selection of 30lb and 40lb carp fish and perhaps even a 50 or 60lber.
In May 2017 this year 6 anglers caught over 50 carp including the 60lber
(twice), 2 x 50s and numerous others between 20lb and 49lb.
Thanks to the lakes position, none of these facilities impact on the privacy and
tranquility of the water or interfere with the angling.

quarry, we still have duty of care to
ensure the carp do not come to harm
because of our yearning for a PB or
indeed a particular fish. Carp just love
a snag, whether it be for some quiet
time away from the constant barrage
of leads in the open water, or simply
because they like to bask there in
what they see as sanctuary, you can
bet that where there are snags, there
are carp. With this thought in mind,
when fishing in the proximity of sub-
surface obstacles, initially you need to
try to assess the extent of their spread
and make a mental note of their
severity, i.e. how dense the branches
are and how thick they are. This will
serve a few purposes, but primarily
you can weigh up the chances of
landing a fish safely, extracting a fish
should it get caught up in the snag,
and what sort of rig and lead setup to
use to combat all these factors in a
responsible manner.
Something we must remember is
the fact that it is not a fish at all costs,
and we should have enough respect
for our quarry to fish responsibly. By
this I mean that although the fish may
well be in the depths of the snags, it
doesn't mean that you have to
deposit your rig in the thick of it as
well. The results of such foolhardy
actions can result in major fish dam-
age or ultimately tethering due to
snapped line, which is hardly very
sporting. So with my moral ramblings

dont know about you, but for
me this last winter was a
headbanger. I fished hard for
no reward, and come the first
signs of spring and my first
bite for months, I only bloody
lost it due to a cut off on my leader. Id
had enough, and a new challenge
was needed. Thankfully I had just the
place in mind. The venue is one I had
done the odd trip on over the last few
years, and I had picked up snippets of
info from the odd angler I met, and of
course the dog walkers. Plenty of you
will no doubt see dog walkers as a
pain at times, but who better to get
info from than people who are using
the towpath regularly? Obviously
their perspective of fish sizes may be
a little over the top, but generally the
numbers they see and the areas they
see them in are spot-on. If you
havent guessed yet from the towpath
clue, the venue in question is a canal
not just any canal, but one that is
actually disused and closed for

of them around these days, but not
many of them can write like Mick

The Old
Canal
By Tommy De Cleen
B
ack in the day, around
the first half of the
90s, I started to fish on
the Belgian canals.
These waterways are
the waters I favour
fishing over lakes and so on. Its quite
hard to say why I like fishing these
kind of waters, but its the magic, the
atmosphere, the unknown (I cant
really put my finger on why) but for
some reason the buzz of catching
carp from a canal gives me more
pleasure than from a pool/lake. Also
canal fish are all different in shape,
size and even strain, not like on lakes
where all fish stocks come from the
same fish farm strain. I have been
fishing on and of for many years on
canals, and the canal that I am writ-
ing about now is quite special to

like a nice water/canal, and on a we soon got fishing on the lovely old with fish up to 17kg, but for some rea-
son or another we did not fish there
very long. We only had a few sessions
in that summer and moved on the
other green banks.
But this canal kept fading in and
out of my mind for all these years and
I wondered what it would be like. I
heard from my friend Big Nic that it
was still quiet there (only the local
anglers), so after some talking with
my angling mate Jurgen, last year
2012 around March we started to go
back to fish this lovely old canal.
Some things had changed but not
much (some trees were cut what a
shame) only the fish got a bid bigger
and as Big Nic told me not many
anglers fished here (only some locals).
So we had a few very good sessions in
the spring with some very nice fish
caught by me and my mate Jurgen
(yes we still fish together and we love
it) up to a 40lb/19,2kg common, but
many other good fish no real mon-
sters but these fish are all I ask for.
They dont need to be all 20 or 25kg in
my book a great carp is a great carp
no matter its size.
I love angling, and thats what I do;
I go out and do my thing and enjoy
every minute of it, and the carp I
catch are part of my life (my angling
life) and these old and not so old great
looking creatures are all characters in
their own right! So we had a good

Here she is at last! Regarded by many as the ultimate big carp, the stunning Black Mirror, captured here beneath
the Colnemere snags. The Black Mirror joins Bazil and Heather in our legendary carp hall of fame, soon to be
joined by other famous carp that have shaped our big carp heritage, starred alongside the UKs most famous carp
anglers and made us all gasp at their beauty and give those who have dedicated their lives in pursuit of them, the
utmost respect. One of my favourite carp of all time strong, dark and so very difficult to put on the mat. Once
again an absolute masterpiece, the one and only Black Mirror is available now as a small number of signed and
numbered prints (100). Anyone interested in this or any of the others take a look at the website.
At the very modest price of 25, this is a collection not to be missed.
There will never be a collection like this again. Now is your only chance to own the history fish collection.

whilst these have plenty of oils in
their makeup, because of the poros-
ity of their nature, they will start to
soften immediately and take on
water. Depending on the type of
biscuit used some will stay on the
surface longer than others, but one
thing is for sure, and that is that
they will all saturate and sink even-
tually.
To overcome this irksome ele-
ment in floater fishing, there are
some clever alternatives to use that
have the same effect, but have the
added advantage of never getting
saturated, and stay on the hook on a
long cast. Enterprise Tackle have
come up with the ultimate solution
for the chum mixer user in the form
of two sizes of counterweighted,
artificial dog biscuits. There are five
in a pack, so more than enough for
a few sessions, as long as you avoid
casting up trees! These really are a
godsend because they can be
fished on a hair by removing the
shot from mixer and replacing it
with the plug supplied, or alterna-

mind, there is even an artificial
bread product available to hair rig
or hook directly, and this can be
constantly cast without fear of los-
ing it. There are also no worries
about a carp swallowing it because
it remains tethered to the hook or
hair very effectively, and the only
thing you might need to keep mon-
itoring is the unwanted attention
from the venue waterfowl, as Im
sure we all know how much they
love a bit of bread!
The final item I like to utilise for
some floater fishing or zig rigging is
high density foam, which is avail-
able in small strip blocks or squares
from Solar, Nash Tackle or Fox. For
floater fishing I like to use the sandy
coloured version trimmed into a
mixer-like shape, and again this can
be punctured to soak in your cho-
sen liquid attractor. The foam also
comes in black, red, yellow and
orange, and for zig rigging a small
piece of this can really prove to be
deadly if fished at the right depth. It

The ninth carp in our gallery of Legendary Carp Paintings is the largest carp ever to swim in UK waters. Our
current British record was pursued by many, yet only caught by a comparative few. One of the first documented
captures from Conningbrook, its home, was by Paul Forward, who caught Two-Tone, as she was eventually named,
at as very modest thirty pounder, but she soon attained much heavier weights, as was destined to become a UK
record. Anglers such as Terry Hearn, Jim Shelley, Dave Lane and Lee Jackson are amongst those who held Kents
biggest prize. In fact the British record changed hands several times as she steadily grew beyond the incredible
60lb barrier until in 2008, Oz Holness claimed the record at 67lb 8oz, a record that stands today. Sadly she has
now passed, but is recaptured here in this incredible painting in all her glory speeding off through the depths.
As with the others, only 100 signed and numbered prints are available.
Available now for only 25.
Others in the series include: Bazil, Heather, The Black Mirror, The Burghfield Common, The Bishop, Mary and
Marys Mate, The Royal Forty and Jumbo.

That enigmatic history fish Jumbo from Yateleys Pad Lake is the next in our Legendary Carp series. This awesome
creature was arguably the most difficult of the big Yateley trio to catch simply because it lived in the tiny, shallow
Lily Pad Lake and was constantly under incredible angling pressure from those that pursued it. This great chunk of
a mirror attained an all-time high just short of Walkers record and was caught by such great anglers as McDonald,
Maylin, Hearn and Sharp. Truly a legend, Jumbo now sits side-by-side with its peers Bazil and Jumbo on the wall of
fame. This painting took the artist over six months to complete such is the attention to detail. There are four more
paintings to go to complete the set. The next will be Two-Tone, our current record, and there will also be Walkers

complete the set. Available now for only 25.

The Royal Forty swam off the carp anglers radar right under the noses of the best carp anglers of the
1990s in its London Park home for many years until it was discovered. In fact even after it was caught,
initially its home was kept a closely guarded secret. It wasnt until Big Carp Legend Ritchie McDonald got
on its trail and landed this incredible fish that it was finally put on the map. Terry Hearn couldnt wait to
tick this one off his list and sacrificed a season on the Car Park Lake, and the capture of Arfur as it turned
