Inquiry Based-3 Points

The students performed the first and second step from the handout which included an
investigation and questions regarding the candy. The first step in the handout, students looked at
the objects which in this case were candy and a plastic plate, and they were asked to identify the
characteristics. Such as there colors, shapes, and textures. The second step has students complete
a simple investigation. Students take the Gobstoppers (candy) and make a pattern on the plate
using the candy. Once the pattern is made students will pour water in the center of the plate until
the water has reached all the candy. Students will then see what happens when the candy has
been touched by the water.

Science TEKS Alignment-3 Points

(5) Matter and energy. The student knows that objects have properties and patterns. The student
is expected to:

(A) observe and record properties of objects, including relative size and mass, such as
bigger or smaller and heavier or lighter, shape, color, and texture; and

(6) Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that energy, force, and motion are related and
are a part of their everyday life. The student is expected to:

(C) observe and describe the location of an object in relation to another such as above,
below, behind, in front of, and beside; and
These TEKS align with the experiment, in the first TEK students are given the opportunity to
identify the properties of the candy used in the experiment. They can identify that the candy is
different colors, they are round and smooth. As for the plate it is white and its shape is a circle. In
the second TEK, students are asked to make a pattern on the plate with the candy. Students also
are asked how the candy is placed for example the red one is beside the yellow one.

Assessment -3 points
For the first assessment, I orally asked students about the experiment. I asked students the
following questions, what are the characteristics of the Gobstoppers and the plate? What is the
shape of the plate and what shapes are the Gobstoppers? For the second assessment, I had
created a worksheet for students. They are asked four questions in regards to above, below,
beside, and in front of. They have to draw what two candies would look with these four words
and the paper is divided into four squares for different drawings. These assessments did work.
These two assessments gave me the opportunity to check for one if they understood the meaning
of characteristics and if they could tell me themselves. The second assessment gave me the
opportunity to see if the students understood the vocabulary words used to describe the meaning
of the location between to objects.

Changes-3 points
One thing that I would change is using a different liquid. I would want to see if there is a
difference between using water and other liquids. I would want to know if changing the liquid
has any impact of the change of the candy.
