projected to be atop the first
BCS rankings, which are to be

The meat of the schedule
starts this weekend for Ohio
State, one of 13 teams still
undefeated, and pessimists
abound. Plenty of challenges
remain if the Buckeyes are to

Championship Game on Jan. 10

thought OSU proved something
with its Sept. 11 victory over

now-unranked Canes were

ing his legs nearly blown off by a land

view sought guidance from the
Chapel. At that point, leaders at
the Chapel began giving pulpit,
leadership and financial assist-
ance to its daughter church.
Valleyview was at a cross-
roads. We were experiencing de-
clining attendance and needed to
figure out where do we go from
here. We explored everything,
from remaining independent to
becoming a campus of the Cha-
pel, said the Rev. Kevin Seager,
interim pastor at Valleyview.
When it was all said and done,
we felt God was leading us to be
part of a larger, regional church.
This will be the best of both
worlds, building a local commu-
nity church with a link to a
strong regional church.
L ast D ecember , leaders of
both churches voted to join in an
engagement with plans to wed
as a church merger. In July, 95
percent of the Valleyview con-
gregation voted to become the
Chapel site in Wadsworth. The
Chapel family voted last week,
by an 88 percent majority, to ex-
pand into Wadsworth.
Gary Kisling, a trustee at Val-
leyview, said the merger is a
welcome change for their parish-
ioners. It is also an opportunity
for the Chapel to expand its
reach, he said.
We have always been associ-
ated with the Chapel. Our belief
and value system is the same, so
there will be no changes there,
Kisling said. But the merger
will allow for greater outreach in
the Wadsworth area. Being
linked to the great resources of
the Chapel will give us more op-
portunities for ministry, for mis-
sions and for our members and
attendees to be served by the
church. This is just a great op-
portunity to serve and accom-
plish the great cause of Christ.
On Wednesday, the Rev. Zac
Derr was named pastor at the
Wadsworth campus. Derr, a for-
mer University of Akron football
standout, and his wife, Hilary,
live in Wadsworth with their
two children Jillian Davy, 3,
and Andrea, 1.
Derr, 31, began attending the
Chapel while at the university
and became involved in the col-
lege ministry. During his junior
year, while studying emergency
management, he felt God calling
him to the ministry. After com-
pleting his undergraduate de-
gree, he took a detour into the
world of professional and semi-
professional football, trying out
for the Dallas Cowboys and the
Atlanta Falcons and landing po-
sitions in the Arena Football
League.
His last attempt to venture
into the pros, in Atlanta, ended
in 2006 with an injury during the
first day of training camp. He
came back to Akron and re-
turned to the Chapel, working
full time with young married
couples and earning a graduate
degree in religion from Trinity
Evangelical Divinity School. He
most recently served as family
pastor at the Chapel, overseeing
the childrens, youth, marriage
and family ministries.
Im really excited to be a
part of a church that is rooted in
a town but is geographically
based. This is a church that has
an opportunity to be a blessing
to the community of Wadsworth
and the surrounding area, Derr
said. We will work to build re-
lationships. I have a heart to not
only be a pastor of a church but a
pastor in the community. Our
goal is to see people come to
faith in Christ and become com-
mitted followers of Jesus.
Valleyview sits on 30 acres at
1391 State Road in Wadsworth.
The building includes an all-pur-
pose room that serves as the
worship area, classroom space
and offices. The church commu-
nity has an annual budget of
$530,000 and a building debt of
$1.75 million. Trustees are cur-
rently working on a plan to elim-
inate the building debt.
The church attracts about 250
people to its 10:30 a.m. Sunday
worship service and Adult Bible

lar basis, Sartarelli said. The
primary reason we are transi-
tioning Valleyview into a new
entity is because the research
shows that new people are at-
tracted to new churches. And
our goal is to attract people who
dont go to church in Medina
County.
All three campuses of the
Chapel will offer the same pro-
grams, services, preaching and
ministries. The church offers
more than 300 programs, includ-
ing activities for children and
teens , B ible studies , support
groups and ministries for singles
and families.
