Project MOHMS Ground Floor Dinem House Reception Facelift

Client Yatulau Company Ltd

Year 2017

The design brief specifically outlines the

Minister for Health & Medical Services
intention to provide a better image of the
ministry thorough the upgrade of their existing
reception at the Ground Floor of Dimen
House, Amy Street, Toorak, Suva. The
reception is required to be operating 24/7
during construction, therefore it presents an
initial design planning challenge. The design
! that we provided both satisfied the two client
requirements that are discussed above.

The existing reception is almost informal in its current state as staff and visitors access are not clearly
defined. The space is not well presented which has prompted the Minister for MOHMS to pursue for
design change.

The design attempts to evoke a sense of care and responsibility that the MOHMS has to provide to the
people of Fiji. First and foremost, the new reception design allows the services to cater for both the able
and disable people in our country. The circulation space for the public, staff at ground level and those
going to the upper levels are clearly defined with the control and surveillance to be provided by the
security personnel and the two staff at the new reception counter. The inclusion of a feature wall behind
reception serves two purposes i) where the MOHMS Signage will be displayed, and 2) creates a corridor
for staff access to both ends of the floor during working hours. The ceiling and walls will be painted white,
the feature wall in blue and the floated mahogany timber slated ceiling lining in clear finish is intended to
provide a contrasting feature and to create a sense of wellbeing in the space. The use and innovative
detailing of local timbers, selection of paint colours, are all intended to be simplistic in nature, but will
foster the image that the MOHS is hoping to achieve for this project.

None of the existing walls and doors are going to be altered, therefore the work of the ministry wont be
affected during the construction phase of the project. The project is still awaiting for clients approval to
begin construction.
