MASSAGE THERAPY . . .
Health care is focusing more than ever on the importance of the
prevention of disease and promotion of health. Massage therapy,
relaxation techniques, and chiropractic care are the three most used
methods of integrative health care for reducing physical, mental, and
emotional tension due to stress. The body can hold much tension
before the brain registers a pain signal. Muscles begin to tighten and
tighten and finally, one small action pushes the muscle over the edge,
and we feel pain. By receiving a massage at least once a month, ten-
sion is prevented from building up, giving less chance for spasm to
occur.
Relief of tension and pain is perhaps the most popular benefit of
massage therapy. How does massage relieve the pain and tightness?
First, when a muscle is strained from injury, such as picking up
something that is too heavy, or sitting hours at the computer, a pain-
spasm-pain cycle can begin. As the muscle stays contracted it burns
more oxygen, and more lactic acid (waste material) is produced. With
the contraction, the blood vessels in the area become constricted so
the muscle doesn’t get enough blood supply. This leads to decreased
oxygen and nutrients, which leads to further contraction. Lactic acid
levels build, irritating the nerves. The tightened muscle also begins to
put pressure on surrounding nerves, creating pain, numbness, and tin-

formed over 100 hours of community in-kind labor for the Clean

After growing up in a small rural town in Darke County for 23 years and now employed as Volunteer
Coordinator with the Darke County Parks, I cannot say THANK YOU enough. The volunteers here in
Darke County are very willing, dedicated, and hardworking individuals.
A huge “thanks” goes out to the wonderful core of volunteers that spend many hours volunteering at
the Darke County Parks. This past March, our volunteers served over 500 individuals at the Waffle and
