SEMINAR 3

This weeks seminar discussed majoring in environmental studies. The seminar was presented
by Mrs. Kathy Roulet. The environmental studies program offers a wide variety of topics that
range from renewable energy, food production, biodiversity, and resource allocation. Each
subtopic provides 36 to 43 credits depending on the topic chosen. These courses are also great
because they tend to enhance teamwork skills as well. In addition, they allow you to take part
in courses within and outside your faculty, allowing room for minor courses as well. The honors
program is available to all U3 students and graduates can pursue jobs that range from
environmental education advocators to an ecologist to a GIS specialists.
The next part of the seminar discussed Global Food security major. The program was recently
established back in 2014. Food security secures the presence of food in our world and ensures
people meet their dietary needs. Composed of four parts; food availability, utilization, access
and stability. In the next few decades, the world would need to increase the rate of food
production by at least 50-70% to feed the increasing population. Climate change poses a great
threat to this rate of increase. Natural resources such as land, ocean, and forests are quickly
depleting. Thus, those interested in resolving such world problems would develop an interest in
this area of study. With job openings in governmental and nongovernmental facilities, private
industries, universities, farms and local communities, it provides a diverse field of study.
