PRESIDENTS CORNER
Hello Key Clubbers!

Its been a rough few weeks adjusting to being back to school
after Hurricane Harvey. I sincerely hope that everyone is safe and
okay and if not know that you are in our thoughts. But like all
things in life, we must make the best out of these situations. With
that thought in mind, Im excited to be planning the school years
agenda and events with my officers and co-president. I
anticipate for it to be a great year and I hope you share the same
enthusiasm and eagerness to volunteer as me and my officer
team does!

I am extremely proud to be a member of our community given
the large amount of new and returning members and your
humanitarian efforts in these trying times. It gives me great hope in
the strength of our community and the values its students hold. Im
honored to serve every one of you as your co-president and be
the medium through which you find how gratifying community
service can be.
Feeling incredibly grateful and EXCITED, I look forward to meeting
everyone of you at volunteer events and socials. Its going to be a
great rest of the year!

Yours in service, Ivana Lin

your club plan on par<cipa<ng?

We have decided to partner with a fellow Taylor High School club. With the
Best Buddies and Key Club collabora>on, members will be able to volunteer
at or even aAend the socials and make friends with the disabled students at
our school. Our goal is to make sure no one is isolated or lonely at our
school, and make sure everyone has a friend, especially for the disabled,
who dont get to spend as much >me with the rest of their class

Power of Social Media

Social media a very powerful tool when it comes to communication within a

club. It is an easy way to spread information to the members of our club. We
use social media to attract different kinds of people to Key Club, and also
remind them of upcoming events.
Social media increases the outreach of our club. For example, on Instagram
we pop up on suggested accounts lists. Our account is also tagged in some of
the posts of our members and other organizations. This gives us the advantage
of possibly gaining a new member who might have not joined if they had not
seen our account prior. Social media is another outlet that gives out information
to the public. We also use eye-catching photos to attract new members to our
club. If your feed is boring (no offence lol) its just not as likely for people to look
at. We create fun and interesting posts to keep our members involved in Key
Club. These posts can also determine if a person wants to join or not. Again,
on Instagram, if one scrolls down far enough, they will see our past events,
socials, and meetings. This allows for insight into what Key Club does, before
ever joining. This information, which is readily available, shows our past and
people can decide to join or not.
During our first meeting, we urged upcoming members to follow all our social
media accounts. This secures that they will have information regarding the
club, such as due dates for membership fees. They will have knowledge of
what Key Club is about, and future service events that they are able to sign up
for. Insight into our past is also available to new members. They have the
ability to see past events and events we do every year, such as Paws and
Relax. As for our older members, social media is more of a platform for
reminders and information regarding upcoming events. After meetings, we post
the service events that were talked about and the links to the sign-up. This
circles information within the club and does not let information about events
become stagnant. This is significant because by not allowing the information to
die, we can get more people to volunteer at events. Meeting information is also
provided on social media. If people dont see our flyers in the school, they are
able to know when meeting dates are because of our posts. Social media is
another outlet we use in order to get information out to our members.

@KeyClub

Our club has had social media for a few years now, including Instagram, Twitter,
Facebook, Remind, and more recently Snapchat. They are the fastest and easiest
way to communicate directly with members, and it allows them to ask questions and
receive a fast response. Through social media, we can showcase our members
volunteering at events, and promote fundraisers we have coming up. We can also
meet Key Clubs from all over the world, and stay in contact with our division and
district.
The most important tool for our club is Remind, which I and the other officers use to
send mass messages to all our members. They can sign up by texting our code,
@jethskey, to 81010 and theyll receive updates from us whenever we send a
message out. Its very important they sign up so they can know when the next
meeting is, and it is the easiest way to send out volunteering links for members to
sign up. Students can also text the remind to ask questions where I can answer
them right away; this year, weve had the best use out of remind, and I talk with
members regularly to clear up any questions and confusion.
Our next most used social media app is Instagram, which our historian mainly posts
on and manages; however, all the officers have access to the account. We have over
300 followers right now, and the historian posts about once a week regarding
meetings, district/divisional meetings, and big events. Almost everyone has an
Instagram these days, so many of our new members have followed us this year. We
even get DMs sometimes from members asking questions which we can answer
easily.
Additionally, we have a Facebook group that I mainly post on, and a Twitter account
that our historian manages. The younger generations do not really use or have
Facebook accounts, so weve slightly moved away from it this year; however, I will
continue to send out updates in the group. It is difficult to add people to the
Facebook group because you have to be friends with them, so the members have to
request to join themselves. We also have quite a few followers on Twitter, where the
historian posts the same photos she posts on Instagram. We can also use Twitter to
interact with all the clubs in the school, and even the Principal who uses the schools
Twitter. We can DM the principal and ask him to announce an event we have coming
up on the morning announcements, or ask him to come to one of our events.
To conclude, social media is very beneficial towards communicating with members,
signing up for events, and promoting upcoming events. I highly recommend for every
club to at least create a Remind to start, and then move from there.

Utilization of Social Media

Social media- whether it be Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or even

Remind- is viewed as an asset here at Taylor. It helps let members know about
new volunteering opportunities, upcoming socials, as well as reminders for our
next meeting. It helps members remain accountable for their hours and to stay
active. When looking through their feed on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, they
will be reminded of their duties as a member of Key Club and things like
volunteering events would be easily shared among their fellow members.
Remind 101 and GroupMe are probably the most vital social media we use for
communication. Not only do we remind our members of volunteering event
signups or when our next meeting is, but we also have one for our officers where
we remind them of their duties and tasks for a certain month. Whenever a sign up
is made for a certain volunteering event, members immediately follow the link we
texted them and sign up. This creates an extremely efficient and easy way to let
members sign up for volunteering events. For the officers, GroupMe serves as an
extension for Remind101, where we brainstorm possible dates for officer
meetings and notify each other of when certain tasks need to be fulfilled.
Instagram is the main social media we like to use to share pictures of volunteers.
It not only increases member interaction, but also helps non-members see the
opportunities that Key Club volunteers get and will hopefully convince them to
join Key Club. It also serves as a reminder for upcoming meetings. The pictures
we post show our interactions with other clubs and communities in the Katy area
as well as show our Key Club members how involved they are in our community
and that we are really making a difference, which is usually a goal for many Key
Club members that I've asked. The fact that we are making a difference in our
own community boosts members morale and garners more attention for the club
throughout our high school, which leads to more membership.
Other social media like YouTube is used to show members the fun we have at
certain events that Key Club holds like DCMs or other fundraising and social
events. our historian edits the videos into a short clip and it showed in our
meeting which helps our members see the fun and want to join in next time. This
in turn increases interaction in our social events and gets our members involved
with the social aspect of Key Club.
