CivE 303 Structural Analysis 1

ASSIGNMENT 5
Slope-Deflection Method
Assigned: Monday, March 2, 2015
Due: Wednesday, March 11, 2015 4:00 p.m.
Notes: Assignments must be done in pencil on engineering or grid paper.
Minimum standards of neatness expected. Messy or illegible work will not be marked.
Show all of your work.

Slope-Deflection Method
1. Analyze the frame shown in Figure 1 to determine all member end moments and support reactions if
Support D experiences a specified support rotation of 0.005 rad. counter-clockwise in addition to the
uniformly distributed load shown on beam ABC. Sketch the shear force and bending moment
diagrams for the frame. Assume EI is 20,000 kNm2 for all members.

2. Analyze the frame shown in Figure 2 to determine all member end forces and support reactions.
Assume EI is 10,000 kNm2 for all members.

3. Reanalyze the frame in Figure 2 to determine the joint rotations and/or displacements if a 21.2 kN
horizontal load to the right is applied at joint B in addition to the 100 kN load on member BC (no need
to compute end moments or support reactions). Assume EI is 10,000 kNm2 for all members.

4. Briefly discuss why the frames in Questions 1, 2 and 3 do or do not experience sidesway.
