The saying goes that goals not written down are just wishes and are likely to stay that way.
Recent studies have backed up this theory when they showed students who wrote down their
goals were more likely to achieve success.

GOALS for Next Quarter

My plan to improve my reading habits and thus improve my comprehension skills:
Next quarter, Im going to Blog about some of the books I read to practice
how I write about the books I read. Specifically, I didnt analyze how the
message or tone changes throughout a book in my blog responses. If I keep
blogging, I can practice writing about how the meaning changes throughout
a book so that I can get an A next quarter.

My plan to improve my writing skills or revision habits and thus improve my

communication skills:
_________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

My plan to improve my speaking and listening skills and thus improve my

communication skills:
My goal for next quarter is to present some of my blogs to a small group
of students to practice my speaking and listening skills. I dont really feel
very comfortable speaking / listening in small-groups or during
whole-class discussion, so maybe if I work on presenting in small groups, I
can become more confident when I need to speak and listen each day in class.

My plan to improve my word study skills and thus improve my writing skills:
_________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

I should be able to reach these goals by the end of next quarter J

Teacher Notes:
James did a good job reflecting on his performance as a reader, speaker, and
listener. I disagreed with his reading score slightly. He tried and made some
progress toward achieving the Exceeds reading skills, so hell get some
credit for that. As a reader, his grade will average out to an 85%.
Additionally, he read 10 independent reading books this quarter!

As a speaker and listener, I think JAmes accurately reflected on his

strengths and weaknesses. He needs to practice speaking in front of
small-groups in order to be more comfortable sharing his thoughts during
seminar discussions. He prepares well, but doesnt always share his thoughts.
As a speaker / listener, his grade will average out to a 75%.

Taken together, his final ela grade will average to an 80% (B), rather than
the C that he said he deserved.
