In Ontario, municipal governments employ the majority of police officers (except commissioned). The
provincial government accounts for the next highest share of employment, while federal agencies
employ these officers to a lesser extent.
Some First Nations communities also administer their own police services.
The rate of growth in the number of police officers in the province has been weakening more recently,
following strong increases earlier in the decade. Ontario has approximately 58 municipal police services
and each region usually undertakes its own recruitment. Therefore, the amount of opportunities
available and the frequency of hiring will vary across regions. However, generally budgetary
considerations will likely constrain the level of employment creation for these officers. Within the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) service, impending retirements are expected to generate several job
openings during the forecast period.
This occupation has low requirements for entry, normally completion of high school, which opens the
process to a large pool of applicants. However, new recruits tend to have much higher levels of
education and this will create stronger competition for placements in some regions of Ontario. Police
services sometimes have targeted hiring, for example, focusing on individuals from specific ethnic
communities, and gender, for representation.
