Physical Education & Healthy Living

Grade Level: 6, 7, 8 (M.S.)

Length of Course: 36 weeks
Prerequisites: NONE

Major Concepts:

The Physical Education and Healthy Living course is divided into two major streams.
1 Physical Education and 2. Healthy Living. The course is designed to provide the
elementary student with an enjoyable and successful experience in school sports
and to provide a basis for the individual to participate in a number of physical
activities.
The healthy living strand will provide students with the knowledge and skills
they need to
develop, maintain, and enjoy healthy lifestyles, as well as to solve problems,
make decisions, and set goals that are directly related to personal health and
well-being.

Through the physical education and healthy living curriculum, students will
develop:
• an understanding of the importance of physical fitness, health, and well-being
and the factors
that contribute to them;
• a personal commitment to daily vigorous physical activity and positive health
behaviours;
• the basic movement skills they require to participate in sport and physical
activities throughout their lives.
Much emphasis will be placed on participation, teaching sportsmanship,
teamwork, improving motor skills through calisthenics and gaining knowledge
unique to a variety of physical activities and sports.

Evaluation Techniques:
The student evaluation will be based on demonstrated skills, mannerisms,
activity record and social skills. The course grade will be given on active
participation, demeanour and physical improvement with no written
examination. Students will be given a Passing or Failing grade.

Footwear & Clothing Guideline:

Throughout the year students will be expected to participate in often rigorous

physical activity. It is important that students are dressed accordingly for all
types of physical activity and weather.
All students MUST be prepared for class with the following clothing: sneakers,
socks, shorts or sweatpants and an appropriate t-shirt or sweater with no
disrespectful pictures or words.
