Testing of Wastewater Sample for Floc Formation

I. Objective:

To observe the formation of flocs when a flocculating agent is added to a sample

wastewater

II. Materials:

Beaker
Graduated Cylinder
Stirrer
Wastewater Sample
Flocculating agent (polymer)
Imhoff Cone
DO and pH meter

III. Procedure:

1. Collect wastewater sample to be tested

2. Measure 500 mL of wastewater sample in a beaker
3. Determine its DO (Dissolved Oxygen), pH, chlorine level and temperature and
Record.
4. Measure 10 mL of flocculant in a graduated cylinder and then add to the sample
wastewater
5. Stir the sample for a few seconds
6. Determine its DO (Dissolved Oxygen), pH, chlorine level and temperature and
Record
7. Transfer the sample to the imhoff cone and observe
8. Note observation every 10 minutes for one hour after settling in the imhoff cone
and every 30 minutes there after
9. Record the level of solids forming at the bottom of the imhoff cone as well as the
water level
10. Wait for another 30 minutes and then record the sludge level
11. Determine its DO (Dissolved Oxygen), pH, chlorine level and temperature
12. Repeat the above procedures using a different amount of flocculant for each trial

IV. OBSERVATIONS:

Observe and describe the following: sample color, floc color, floc formation,
settling time (important to note to verify reaction time), floc quantity.
Record the following: DO, pH, temperature and chlorine level of (1) sample, (2)
sample with polymer during stirring/agitation, (3) settling
