Understanding Meter in Poetry

Rhythminpoetryiscreatedbythestressesoraccentsinthewordsofthepoem.Forexample,in
wordsthathavemorethanonesyllable,oneofthesyllablesisusuallypronouncedmorestronglythan
theothers.Forexample,inthewordbasketball,thefirstsyllableispronounced
morestrongly:BASketball.Wordsthatcontainonlyonesyllablemightnormally
bestressed,ortheymightnot.UsuallylittlewordslikeandandIandtheare
notstressed.Butsinglesyllableverbslikelikeorplayusuallyarestressed.The
bestwaytofigureoutwhichwordsorsyllablesinawordarestressedistoreadthe
linealoud.Inthelinebelow,thestressedsyllableshavebeencapitalized,andthe
unstressedsyllablesarelowercase.

ILIKEtoPLAYBASketball

Therhythmthatiscreatedbycombiningstressedandunstressedsyllablesinaline
ofpoetryiscalledmeter.Afootisthegroupofstressedandunstressedsyllables
thatmakeupthemeterofapoem.Nowlookatthesamplelineagain.Thistime,
verticallineshavebeenplacedinthelinebetweeneachfoot.Therearethreefeet
inthislineofpoetry.

Poemscanhaveanynumberoffeetintheirlines,butusuallyeachlinehasthesamenumberoffeet.
