Description of the artifact and how it meets the standard and criteria:

This is a dictation assessment, rubric and the student recording sheet. This monitors
students learning in a variety of ways. Each week, we have a spelling skill that we are
working on, and in the dictation sentences, we including many opportunities for student
to apply that skill. We also include past skills that we have worked on. This spiral helps
the teachers determine which students need more instruction on the spelling skills. The
rubric on the students recording sheet allows the teachers to get this back to the
student in a timely manner. This assessment is constructive because we send these
home weekly, and with the needed comments for parents to understand why their child
received a 1, 2 ,or 2+.

Reflection on the artifact:

I am very pleased with the way our spelling is going at Anderson. I am amazed at how
much information I am receiving about each students spelling abilities with the dictation
sentences. I am not simply passing over their score each week because they did not
memorize the words correctly, but I am looking at a pattern in the discrepancies of the
spelling skills. I know more information and data in their spelling ability and can change
the way I am teaching my skills based on what they students are needing. Students
and parents are also in the know of what they need to focus on when they are practicing
as well.
