Lesson Plan Friday, April 7th

1. Time Needed: 47 minutes

2. Materials Needed: First Suite in Eb (Gustav Holst), listening/rhythm/meter assignment

3. Learning Objectives: Students will learn to apply musical concepts related to meter, rhythm, and

style in the affective dimension of music in preparation for a comprehensive performance.

4. Assessment: Students will improve rhythmic and stylistic elements in Holsts First Suite in Eb,

and they will follow up with a listening activity that assess their understanding of rhythms in 2/2

time signatures.

5. Personal Objective: I will keep my direction brief so the students can play more and time will be

spent more efficiently.

6. Procedure:

a. Anticipatory Set

i. Students will gather their materials (instruments, music, pencils) and be seated

and ready to play within one minute of the bell ringing.

b. The Lesson

i. Warm up routine Scale of the Week, Tuning, Chorale

ii. Run through First Suite in Eb (movement 3 March) to refresh students

memory.

1. Creating: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

iii. Begin rehearsal of First Suite in Eb (movement 3)

1. Begin with melodic lines at Box D

a. Slow down to gain greater accuracy of notes and rhythms

b. Check high register sections for upper woodwinds to clarity and

tuning

2. Address intonation in high registers


a. Brass from the piu mosso in m. 169 to the end

b. Woodwinds from D to the end

3. Play through opening (brass) and m. 41 (woodwinds) for rhythms

a. Ensure that students are aware of the time signature (cut time).

b. Play through sections to clarify that all rhythms are correct half

note = one beat; quarter note = half beat

4. Presenting: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for

presentation.

iv. After 25 minutes, pass out Listening Activity

1. Spend 5-7 minutes on activity

2. Teacher will play four sets of 2-measure phrases in 2/2 time that are

found within First Suite. Students will notate the rhythms on a worksheet

within four blank staffs in 2/2 time.

3. Responding: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.

7. Closure

a. Have students hand in their Listening Activity sheets. Praise and give feedback on their

rehearsal. Remind students of practice assignment for the weekend, which is to be

recorded and emailed to teacher by Monday morning. Allow students to pack up and

dismiss them.
