Accessories Etude Lesson Plan
1. Time Needed: 7-10 minutes
2. Materials Needed: Music for Quartet #4, snare drum, crash cymbals, woodblock, timpani
(29 and 26), snare sticks, woodblock stick/beater, white felt timpani mallets;
tuner/vibes, metronome
3. Learning Objectives: Students will learn to play an etude on different percussion
instruments together. They will also learn to use dynamics wisely, based on their
instrument.
4. Assessment: Students will play through Etude #4 while staying in time together and
while playing dynamics appropriate to their instrument.
5. Personal Objective: I will slow down my teaching pace to help students understand and
fully comprehend what I am trying to teach them. I will adjust my speed/pacing as
necessary.
6. Procedure:
a. Welcome class to percussion introduce Etude #4.
b. Assign parts for each instrument.
c. Have students clap and count their parts.
d. Once rhythm is established, have students pick up mallets and play through the
piece one time, counting out loud.
e. If necessary, separate parts and work with individual issues that arise.
f. Discuss dynamics everyone begins forte, cymbals quiet down between m. 21-
25, everyone is back to forte at 33 (except timpani), etc.
g. Have students exaggerate dynamics appropriate for their instrument; play
individual parts as needed.
h. Run through piece again, with exaggerated dynamics.
7. Closing: Great job, everyone. Next time, well rotate parts and make sure everyone gets a
chance to learn all four parts!
