Western Canada Gas Transmission & Midstream

Measurement Equipment Specification

Title: RGT Gas and Liquid Sampling Procedure Number: MES-300

Equipment Specification
Page: 1 of 3

Purpose
This specification outlines the requirements for design, procurement, location and installation of gas and liquid
sampling equipment used at Receipt Points on Spectra Energy Transmission (SET) West Raw Gas Transmission
(RGT) systems.

Responsibility
Responsibility for ensuring this specification is followed resides with the designer, owner and operator of Receipt
Point measurement facilities on SET West RGT systems.

Gas Sampling Specification

The following specifications relate to the design, procurement, location and installation of gas sampling taps and
equipment:
Each gas sample tap must be equipped with appropriate valving and have a Genie A+ GPHV probe, or
equivalent, installed such that the probe tip extends to the centre third of the pipe.
Sample taps must be located such that samples are taken from a fully developed, flowing stream.
The preferred orientation for gas sample taps is on the top of horizontal pipe runs. An optional orientation is
on the side of vertical pipe runs using a 45 latrolet so the inserted probe slopes downward at a 45 angle.
Two gas sampling taps of at least NPS in size must be located upstream of the Receipt Point gas meter.
They should be located as close as practically possible to the outlet of the first vessel upstream of the receipt
point meter (i.e. separator, dehydrator, etc.). They are not to be located within the upstream length of straight
meter tube required by AGA 3.
Sample points must be located at least 5 pipe diameters downstream of any piping disturbances such as
bends, elbows, headers and tees.
Sample points must not be located where phase changes are likely to occur, for instance, downstream of
pressure reducing components such as orifice plates, control valves, flow conditioners or regulators.
Sample points must not be located on long lengths of un-insulated piping where the stream temperature
could decrease.
Where possible, permanent instrumentation indicating the process pressure and temperature should be
located near the sampling point
Access to the sampling points must be provided from grade level or platforms with railings.
Where sample transfer tubing is to be utilized, its length must be minimized, insulated, heat traced and
oriented to prevent trapping of liquids. A means must also be provided to safely purge the entire length of
tubing between the sample probe and the entry point into the sample cylinder.
Where automated samplers are required, they shall be installed through a sampling tap of at least NPS in
size and allow the repair or removal from service without having to depressurize the process piping.

A Bureau of Mines type chilled mirror dew point tester meeting ASTM D1142 and/or GPA 2140 standards
with a supply of chill gas must be permanently installed at the Receipt Point. The specific model supplied
must be manufacturer approved for sour gas application and have a pressure rating equal to or greater than
the maximum allowable operating pressure of the receipt point.

Liquid Sampling Specification

The following specifications relate to the design, procurement, location and installation of liquid sampling taps and
equipment:
Each liquid sample tap must be equipped with appropriate valving and have a Genie A+ GPHV probe, or
equivalent, installed such that the probe tip extends to the centre third of the pipe.
Sample taps must be located such that samples are taken from a fully developed, flowing stream.
The preferred orientation for liquid sample taps is on the side of horizontal pipe runs.
Two liquid sampling taps of at least NPS in size must be located upstream of the Receipt Point liquid
meter, however they are not to be located within the minimum upstream length of straight meter run required.
Sample points must be located at least 5 pipe diameters downstream of any piping disturbances such as
bends, elbows, headers and tees.
Sample points must not be located where vapour breakout is likely to occur, for instance, downstream of
pressure reducing components such as orifice plates, control valves, flow conditioners, regulators, turbine,
positive displacement or coriolis meters.
Sample points must not be located on long lengths of un-insulated piping where the stream temperature
could increase.
An inline static mixer must be installed immediately upstream of any sampling point where stratification of the
liquid stream can occur.
For separator applications, the sample point should be located between the separator outlet and the
flow/level control valve, upstream of the meter. If a pressure booster pump is utilized, the sample point
should be located between the pump discharge and meter inlet.
Where possible, permanent instrumentation indicating the process pressure and temperature should be
located near the sampling point
Access to the sampling points must be provided from grade level or platforms with railings.
Where automated samplers are required, they shall be installed through an additional sampling tap of at least
NPS in size and allow the repair or removal from service without having to depressurize the process
piping.
