Banking & Financial Awareness

1. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the list of the Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs) and identifies the
bank as a D-SIB___ HDFC Bank Ltd.
Note:
Now, there will be three too big to fail financial entities in the country including State Bank of India (SBI) ICICI
Bank and HDFC Bank.
With such classification failure or collapse of these lenders can have a cascading impact on the entire financial
system and the economy of the country.
2. The country is hosting the Eastern Economic Forum -2017 ___Russia.
Note:
The EEF is considered as the biggest international communication platform for cooperation between businesses
leaders and senior government representatives from Russia, the Pacific Region and ASEAN.
3. The country's eight infrastructure sectors grew in July 2017____2.4%.
Note:
The infrastructure sector had expanded 3.1% in July last year, and had grown 0.8% in June this year.
According to official data, coal production increased 0.7 % in July this year, natural gas output grew 6.6 %, steel
production rose 9.2 %, and electricity generation climbed 5.4 %.
4. The union govt. fiscal deficit at the end of July this year touched how many percentage of the budget estimate___92.4%.
Note:
The government's revenue receipts improved to 2.91 lakh crore rupees during the April to July 2017 period, which
is 19.2% of the target for the whole year.
The fiscal deficit is the difference between the government's expenditure and revenue.
5. Govt notifies hike in GST cess on range of cars from mid to large ones to _____25%
Note:
The union govt. has notified hike in GST cess on a range of cars from mid-size to hybrid variant to luxury ones to a
maximum of 25% (earlier 15%), from 2nd of September this year.
With this amendment, taxation on luxury, SUV and other vehicles would be brought at par with that prevailing
pre-GST rollout.
6. SBI Life Insurance has received approval from SEBI for an IPO (Initial Public Offering) of up to _____Rs 8,400 crore.
Note:
The IPO will involve 120 million secondary shares or 12 per cent of the insurer's equity capital.
7. Who has announced a partnership with Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative Bank to offer its protection and savings
products to the latters customers ___Exide Life Insurance.
Note:
PMC Bank is a multi-State scheduled urban cooperative bank with 127 branches.
Exide Life Insurance works with around 50 banks.
8. The Insurance company has received in-principle approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of
India (IRDAI) for its IPO ____Reliance General Insurance.

Currently, ICICI Prudential Life is listed on the stock exchange, while Max Life insurance is indirectly listed through
holding company Max Financial Venture.
9. Country's foreign exchange reserves swells to life high of ____USD 394.55 billion.
Note:
The country's foreign exchange reserves swelled by USD 1.148 billion to a new lifetime high of USD 394.55 billion
for the week ended 25th August 2017.
RBI data showed the foreign currency assets (FCAs) increased by USD 1.142 billion to USD 370.833 billion for the
week under review.
The country's reserve position with the IMF also rose by USD 3.6 million to USD 2.273 billion.

Obituaries

1. Pulitzer-prize winning poet passed away in Hudson, New York___ John Ashbery.
Note:
His 1975 collection, "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror," was the rare winner of the book world's unofficial triple
crown: the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle prize.
2. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest ___ Sultan Ahmed.
Note:
Mr. Ahmed was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Uluberia (Lok Sabha constituency) on a Trinamool Congress
ticket.
He also served as the Union Minister of State for Tourism in the Manmohan Singh government.
3. Arunachal Pradesh health and family welfare minister passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati ___Jomde Kena.
Note:
He was a resident of Gensi village in Lower Siang district.
Kena was elected as the deputy speaker during the Nabam Tuki government and served as a parliamentary
secretary under the Dorjee Khandu and Jarbom Gamlin ministries.
4. The renowned Marathi poet and activist has passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra ____Shirish Pai.
Note:
Pai was the daughter of noted writer-journalist Acharya Pralhad Keshav Atre.
5. Noted journalist and activists was shot dead at her Rajarajeshwari Nagar's residence in Bengaluru ___Gauri Lankesh.
Note:
She was the editor of popular Kannada tabloid Lankesh Patrike founded by her father P Lankesh(writer).
Gauri Lankesh was also part of a panel formed by the State govt to help surrender Naxals to reform.

New Appointments

1. After latest Union cabinet reshuffle, who has become the new Defence Minister of India ____ Nirmala Sitharaman.
Note:
She has become the Indias first woman Defence Minister after Indira Gandhi.
Now, Suresh Prabhu has become the new Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.
2. Former home secretary will be the next Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India____ Rajiv Mehrishi.
Note:
He will replace Shashi Kant Sharma.
Earlier, three senior bureaucrats (Ashwini Attri, Anita Pattanayak and Ranjan Kumar Ghose) have been appointed
as the Deputy Controller and Auditor General.
3. Senior IAS officer took charge as the Union Home Secretary ____ Rajiv Gauba.
Note:
Prior to this, Mr. Gauba was Secretary in the Ministry of Urban Development.

Rajiv Gauba has a graduate degree and is a Gold Medallist in Physics (BSc) from Patna University.
4. Senior bureaucrat has been appointed Secretary in the Department of Financial Services (DFS)___ Rajiv Kumar.
Note:
The DFS looks after the functioning of banks, financial institutions, insurance companies and the national pension
system.
5. Well-known Indian-origin bureaucrat has been appointed as the acting President of Singapore _____J Y Pillai.
Note:
He will replace Tan Kang Yam, who completed his six-year term as President.
This is the first time that the office is vacant since the process of presidential selection has started in 1991.
6. Who has appointed as the Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) ____ Anita Karwal.
Note:
She will replace Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi who has been moved to the National Skill Development Agency as
Director General(DG).
The CBSE is a Board of Education for public and private schools, under the Union Government.
7. Former Information and Broadcasting Secretary will be the new the Election Commissioner of India___ Sunil Arora.
Note:
Achal Kumar Joti is the CEC (Chief Election Commissioner of India), Om Prakash Rawat is the other Election
Commissioner.
Election Commission of India is a permanent Constitutional Body established under Article 324 of the
Constitution.
8. America's foremost expert on US-India trade relations has been nominated as the U.S ambassador to India __Kenneth I.

Note:
He will succeed Richard Verma
The United States Ambassador to India is the chief diplomatic representative of United States in India.

Note:
He succeeded Suresh Prabhu, who has become the new Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.

Note:
He took charge from Dr Kishore Sansi, who had attained Superannuation on 31st August.
11. Bollywood actress has been appointed woman ambassador in 'Friends of Australia' (FOA) advocacy panel ____Parineeti
Chopra.
Note:
She will be the first Indian woman ambassador to be a part of the FOA advocacy panel.
The 'Friends of Australia' (FOA) program has been devised as a way of fostering mutually beneficial and long-term
friendship with those that Tourism Australia regards as unique storytellers.
12. Who has assumed charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) ___
N Baijendra Kumar.
Note:
The NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) Limited is a state-controlled mineral producer of the
Government of India under administrative control of the Ministry of Steel.

1. The states CM has announced a reward of one crore rupees to Arjuna awardee archer Vennam Jyoti Surekha ____ Andhra
Pradesh.

The Chief Minister also announced 10 lakh rupees reward for Devisri Prasad (10-year) of Tirupati on setting the
Guinness World Record in skating.

grievances___ Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
Note:
The awards given to the CBDT was based on the theme of appreciation to the Ministries or Departments.

3. The Airport has bagged the National Award for Excellence in Energy Management ____Rajiv Gandhi International

Narayana Murthy for Global Leadership and Veena Sahajwalla for Research Innovation for her project 'The new

PLuS Alliance Prize is a honour that recognises Research Innovation, Education Innovation, Global Leadership and

1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the annual conference of Rajaswa Gyan Sangam, 2017 in _____New Delhi.
Note:
The objective of the Conference is to enable a two-way communication between the policy-makers and the senior
officers in the field offices with a view to increase revenue collection and facilitate effective implementation of law
and policies in key result areas.
2. Sumitra Mahajan and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi inaugurated an exhibition Naya Bharat-Hum Karke Rahenge to aware the
youth in _____New Delhi.
Note:
Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has organised the event in coordination with DAVP.
It is being organized at 39 places across the county to commemorate the 75 years of Quit India Movement and
forthcoming 75 years of Independence in 2022.
3. The union Govt. has extended the deadline for linking of Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar till ____31st Dec
2017.
Note:
Earlier, the govt. has granted a similar extension for furnishing of Aadhaar for availing the benefits of various
social welfare schemes.
4. The ministry has approved constitution of a 13-member Empowered Steering Committee (ESC) to shape and influence
India's preparation for multi- disciplinary events___ Sports Ministry.
Note:
The Steering Committee will have the mandate to work till 31st December 2020 with clearly defined terms and
references.
These include review of the core probable list of each High Priority and Priority disciplines for the Commonwealth
Games, Asian Games, and Olympic Games.
5. The city has been formally accorded the status of Indias first World Heritage City by UNESCO___ Ahmedabad.
Note:
Earlier, in July the UN agency had inscribed Ahmedabad as India's first World Heritage City at a meeting held in
Poland.
6. The Union minister has announced the formation of an inter-ministerial task force to expedite implementation of the
Centres Namami Gange mission___ Nitin Gadkari.
Note:
The ministry will come out with a detailed schedule on achieving various targets under the mission in a time-
bound and transparent manner.

7. The Environment Ministry has launched an environment awareness initiative on the occasion of ____Teachers Day.
Note:
Under the initiative, an online environmental quiz competition will be conducted at the national level to generate
interest among school children about the science related to environment.
This will help in sensitizing the children on the issues related to environment and development.
8. India-Nepal joint military exercise Surya Kiran XII was held at____Saljhandi, Nepal.
Note:
It is largest exercise in terms of troops participation in series of military training exercises undertaken by India
with various countries.
Surya Kiran series of exercises are held alternately in India and Nepal.

Aayog.
Note:
The panel will give recommendations on sector-specific policy interventions in key employment sectors and

under-employment issue.
10. The union govt. has been constituted under the Chairmanship of former apex court judge to identify key data protection

principles to be considered for data protection.
11. Indian Ambassador to Nepal laid the foundation stone for the proposed Pension Paying Office (PPO) at Butwal Nepal ___

It will benefit approximate 45000 Indian Army Gorkha pensioners and family pensioners in the region.

1. The state is celebrating the biggest cultural festival Thiruonam (the 10th day) and the most auspicious day of Onam ___
Kerala.
Note:
The harvest festival of kerala Onam falls in the first month of Malayalm calendar, chingam.
Keralites across the globe irrespective of religious differences is celebrating the festival in full vigour.
2. Teachers' Day is being celebrated throughout the country on ____5th September.
Note:
On Teacher's Day, students across the nation honour the teachers and gurus in their lives.

States News

1. Who has launched a scheme that provides for physical aids and assisted-living devices for senior citizens belonging to the
BPL category in Gujarat ___ Thaawarchand Gehlot.
Note:
This ambitious scheme, is expected to benefit 5,20,000 senior citizens over a period of three years.
Under the scheme, devices were distributed to senior citizens free of cost.
2. Coast Guard launched an aviation infrastructure including a multi-mission maritime aircraft hanger, MMMA in ____
Bhubaneswar.
Note:
This is part of the ongoing effort by the Coast Guard to strengthen the maritime and coastal security.

The newly launched aviation infrastructure would provide a fillip towards futuristic expansion plan of Coast
Guard's air arm.
3. Who laid the foundation stone for link - 4 of Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation Scheme (SAUNI) Yojana in Rajkot,

The state govt. will provide free education for girls across the state from Class 1 up to graduation in all public and
aided private schools and colleges, excluding professional institutions.
5. The Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated the fourth Government Medical College in ____Koraput.
Note:
The Medical College has been named after Saheed Laxman Naik (freedom fighter of Koraput).
6. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has launched a project at Shahpur primary school _____ Gyankunj e-class project.
Note:
The entire project will work on pilot basis with Interactive e-class room and smart boards have been provided
under this initiative.
1609 government primary schools have been provided laptop, projector, infrared camera, smart board, speaker
and WiFi router facilities for 3,173 class rooms of standard 7 and 8.
About 10,000 tablets are to be given to standard 7 and 8 students across 100 more schools on free of cost.
7. Ye India ka time hai event has been organized at National Institute of Technology at ____Raipur, Chattisgarh.
Note:
Students of NIT Raipur participated in a brainstorming session on 'New India Manthan' and discussed their views
on what kind of India do they imagine for the year 2022.
8. The Gujarat state Govt. have signed the Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) to save the children of Anganwadi from
malnutrition ____Amul (Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation).
Note:
Under the Take Home Ration, district dairies in cooperation with the Gujarat milk marketing federation will
provide nutritive foods to more than 42-lakh children of more than 53 thousand Anganwadis , pregnant-mothers,
lactating mothers and young girls.
9. The state govt. will upgrade employment exchanges to Modern Career Centres ___ Assam.
Note:
As a pilot project two district employment exchanges in Guwahati and Jorhat will be upgraded as modern career
centres.
All modern facilities including counselling will be provided at the proposed career centres.
10. The state has set up a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Cell for the implementation of DBT across schemes in the country___
Assam govt.
Note:
The purpose of the cell is to coordinate efforts at the state level in taking the DBT initiative forward with
immediate effect.
The Chairman of the cell will be the Chief Secretary of Assam.

1. Swedish defence giant and Adani group have announced a collaboration in defence manufacturing entailing billions of
dollars of investment ___ Saab.
Note:
They mainly eyeing a contract for single-engine fighter jets for the Indian Air Force.
The project will encompass design, development, and production of Gripen jets for India in line with the Make in
India initiative.
2. The 9th BRICS summit has begun in the Chinese city with theme BRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future___
Xiamen.

3. Former India captain has become the first wicketkeeper in world cricket to effect 100 stumpings in One Day
Internationals(ODI) ___ Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Note:
Mr. Dhoni achieved the feat in his 301st ODI in Colombo (Sri Lanka), when he whipped off the bails to remove
batsman Akila Dananjaya (Sri Lankan) off leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's bowling.
He has taken 281 catches apart from scoring 9,657 runs so far.

British racing driver Lewis Hamilton has won the 2017 Italian Formula One Grand Prix tournament at the
Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza, Italy.
