We also invite you to visit the schools to see the many exciting projects
underway as part of the district’s master facilities plan. These projects will
greatly enhance the learning opportunities we provide for students. The most
visible of these improvements is the work being done at Lyons Stadium at the
high school. Work to install a new track and synthetic turf in the stadium has

begun with support from citizens and private donors through the Kirkwood
School District Foundation.
On Nov. 2, the district will ask voters to consider two bond issues that are a
response to immediate needs as well as needs outlined in the district’s long-
range facilities plan. Proposition 1, a no-tax rate increase proposal for approxi- teen email:
mately $33.5 million, supports key needs that include providing the capacity
for students to attend kindergarten in their home attendance areas. Currently,

three of the five elementary schools—Keysor, North Glendale and Robinson— kirkwoodpubliclibrary.org
do not have the classrooms needed to allow all their students to attend kinder-
garten in their home school. Also, Proposition 1 would provide a learning 314-821-5770 ext.1020
environment that supports the best in science education for our middle school
students. Both North Kirkwood and Nipher middle schools have outdated sci-
ence classrooms. Proposition 2, a 4.5 cent tax rate increase for approximately
$14.8 million, supports the completion of improvements at Kirkwood High
School, which include an aquatic center, as well as field improvements at both
middle schools. At a cost of 4.5 cents per hundred dollars of assessed valuation,
Propositions 1 and 2 together will provide approximately $48.3 million for
renovation, construction, and improvements for the schools.
I encourage you to learn more about these two bond proposals by visiting
the district’s website at www.kirkwoodschools.org or calling the district’s com-
munity relations office at 314-213-6102.
We look forward to the start of a new school year on Wednesday, Aug. 18.
The education of our children is a top priority for our community and requires
team work and strong community partnerships. Thank you!
Sincerely,

Tom Williams

KSD Telephone Directory 2010-11

The Kirkwood School District phone and voice mail system is part of the overall technology network. Callers are asked to listen to a menu
of options directing them to individual schools or district offices. Each classroom has a telephone and extension number. Parents can phone a
classroom directly to hear homework assignments or to leave messages for the teacher. This directory includes the more frequently requested
numbers. Please note, the designation “vm” refers to voice mail extensions that only allow the caller to hear or leave a message.

Kids, Sports and Contact Lenses

Question: Carrie Gaines, O.D.
My nine-year-old plays sports year round. Board Certified Optometrist
Wearing glasses is really inconvenient. Richard Wieder, M.D.
They slip, get smudged and sometimes get Board Certified Ophthalmologist
knocked off. At what age can a child wear
contact lenses or are there other options? 314 . 842 . 5070
Answer: Dr. Gaines and patient VSP accepted
For kids, ages 8 and up. involved in competitive sports, dance or theater, soft daily disposable lenses are a
great solution when glasses get in the way. There is no need to clean and disinfect the contact lenses since they
are worn for one day and discarded. Because the contact lenses are always new, they are very comfortable.
Not only are daily disposable contact lenses easy to use, they are regarded as the safest type of contact lens
available. There is no cost for contact lens solutions, so they are very affordable.
Daily disposable contact lenses are a good alternative to glasses, when needed. They can increase a child’s
confidence, leading to better performance on the field or on the stage. If your child is
not ready for contact lenses, another popular option is prescription sports goggles.
Summer is a great time to begin contact lens wear before practice begins and
school resumes. We specialize in fitting children, tweens and teens for contact
lenses. Call us today for a consultation.
