Mon 16 St Vincent and the 1832 saw the abolishment of slavery in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In
Grenadines commemoration of this event, a Month of events featuring cultural performances,
Emancipation Month lectures and exhibitions in memory of the African ancestors who survived the
August 2010 middle passage are celebrated.
1 – 31 August 2010
St Vincent and the The breadfruit holds great historical importance to the people of St. Vincent and
Grenadines: the Grenadines. Each year the Breadfruit Festival is celebrated as part of
Breadfruit Festival Vincentian Emancipation Month. In 1793 Captain Bligh brought this staple to the
St. Vincent shores of St. Vincent with the sole intent to feed the slaves. While, it is reported
August 2010 that the slaves apparently did not take a liking to breadfruit their descendants are
1 – 31 August 2010 now singing its praises, as too many it is referred to as the national dish
(depending on the person you talk to) be it roast breadfruit and jackfish or saltfish.
It is found it their everyday language and is so much a part of the national
psyche. To cut down one's breadfruit tree is to take away their livelihood and
people talk about getting a breadfruit box (coffin) if they can't afford one from
the funeral homes. Of course many a home has been constructed from the wood
gained from the tree which further reinforces the versatility of this plant.
57th International The International Billfish Tournament is a classy nautical event attracts deep-sea
Billfish Tournament fishing experienced anglers and boats from around the world for a week-long
San Juan, Puerto Rico tournament, including four fishing days and wonderful parties. The Tournament
16 – 22 August 2010 follows all IGFA conservation procedures, including the tag and release format. In
order to increase the competitiveness of this year’s event, participants will be

Agricultural Science Under the theme “Best Practices in Agricultural Science”, this workshop looks to
Professional strengthen the capacity of teachers to diversify and enhance the Agricultural
Development Workshop Science Programme. Part of the objective is to tech Agriculture as an applied
Bahamas science using best practices in the use and management of Agricultural Science
16 -19 August, 2010 resources and technology to improve productivity. The workshop is coordinated
by Mrs. Patrice Green and Mr. Hamlin Newbold. Dr. Marikis Alvarez will give two
presentations on “Youth Participation in Agriculture” and “Why Best Practices in
Teaching Agricultural Science” respectively.
Tues 17 Slave Uprising On August 17th 1795 the slaves in Curacao surged forth to protest their captivity, a
Commemoration Day pivotal point in the island's history. Each year the day is remembered with joyful
Curacao musical and numerous cultural events on the Rif waterfront in Willemstad.

Thurs 19 World Humanitarian Day This year’s theme “We are humanitarian workers” will remember and honour those
19 August 2010 who have lost their lives while helping others. These men and women are
forgotten heroes, who often work in extreme circumstances, risking their lives to
help the destitute, victims of wars or natural catastrophes, regardless of colour
creed or race with total neutrality. A total of 102 humanitarian workers died in the
exercise of their functions in 2009. This year the United Nations has chosen this day
as it marks the day when 22 employees of the UN, including the UN Special
Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello, were killed in a bomb attack in 2003 in
Baghdad.
