COURSEDESCRIPTION

Movement of people, goods, information and money are crucial for todays economies and businesses. This course on
TransportationandLogisticsManagementbringsforwardthegloballogisticsanddistributionissues,dealingwiththemanagement
ofphysicalmaterialflows,documentation,andinformationflowsincrossbordersupplychains.Acomponentofthecoursealso
handlesthemovementofpeopleanddealswithurban,intercityandinternationaltransportationandoperationalandpolicyissues
therein. Logistics issues such as intermodal transportation, efulfillment, crossborder trade regulations, reverse logistics, and
design of sustainable supply chains are dealt with. Emerging technologies such as warehouse management systems (WMS),
distributionrequirementsplanning(DRP),radiofrequencyidentification(RFID),geographicalinformationsystems(GIS),andglobal
positioning systems (GPS) applications are also part of the course. Qualitative issues (such as regulatory issues, Incoterms and
documentation) as well as very basic quantitative tools and techniques such as the optimum design of distribution systems,
selectionofoptimaltransportationmodes,intermodaltransport,etc.willalsobediscussed.
Upon completion students should be able to arrange and coordinate the transportation of products globally. The course would
contain an underlying Pakistani context and all the issues above will be discussed from Pakistans perspective. The role of cross
bordertradeandlogisticsforregionalinterconnectednessinSouthandCentralAsiawillalsobediscussed.

ThisisanelectivecourseforpeoplewhowantspecializedknowledgeoflogisticsandtransportationsectorsinPakistanand
aroundtheworld.Studentsshouldpossessbasicunderstandingofoperationsmanagementconceptsforcourseenrolment.

1. Todiscussthegrowingimportanceofbusinesslogisticsinmoderncrosscontinentalsupplychains.
2. To discuss about urban, inter city and international transportation for people, different transportation modes and
operationalandpolicyissuesintransportationsector.
3. To discuss the issues with the optimal design of distribution networks, optimal facilities location, warehousing systems,
optimalinventorypositioningandoptimalselectionoftransportationmodes.
4. Tointroducestudentstodifferentmodesoftransportation,issuesofinfrastructureandroleofemergingtechnologiesin
transportationsystems.
5. TotalkaboutPakistanstransportationinfrastructureanditsroleforvariousindustrysupplychains.
6. Todiscussissuesofdocumentation,customsclearance,transactionandcurrencyrisksingloballogisticsinthecontextof
movementofmaterial,moneyandinformation.
