Topic: Lesson 6: Was it really good luck- Interview with Billy PART TWO

Textbook: Way to go 3, Skolska naklada

Type of a lesson: Combined lesson

Aim of the lesson: To expand vocabulary ( hijacker, passenger, undercover, armed), to


practice was/were

Educational tasks: To introduce new and reinforce existing vocabulary, to talk about past
events (was/were)

Functional tasks: To encourage communication in a foreign language based on the previously


acquired knowledge and skills, to improve oral and written expression, to develop reading
comprehension skills

Pedagogical tasks: To talk about terrorism (hijackers, bombs), to establish positive relations
within a class and encourage class communication and cooperation.

Type of work: frontal, individual, work in pairs

Teaching methods: the audio- lingual method, conversational method

Aids and media: textbook, notebook, board, CD, CD player, teacher's book

Skills used: listening, writing, speaking, reading, doing tasks

Anticipated problems: pronunciation of some words, comprehension details

Outcomes: By the end of the lesson students will be able to use new grammar structures and
vocabulary in the target language.
Introductory part:

Activity 1: Starting off the lesson with revising everything students have learnt in the previous
lesson- Famous people of the past.

- Who was the first president of the USA?


- Who was Vasco Da Gamma?
- Who were the Grimm brothers? etc.

Activity 2 : Guessing Game- practising was/were

I think of one famous person of the past, and the class asks questions and tries to guess.

- Where you a man/ a woman?


- Were you Italian/ American?
- Were you a writer/ a president / a painter?
- You were _____________.

Main part:

Activity 3: Asking questions about Billy to see how much they remember.

Activity 4: Before we read the interview with Billy after his trip to Egypt, we will go through
the English-English dictionary of the words introduced in this lesson (hijacker, undercover,
passenger, confused, armed, hero).

Activity 4: Students are given a newspaper article about Billy. The letters in some words are
mixed up and their task is to work it out. They work in pairs.

Billy Affleck, the BINGO zuiq wennir, eye to eye with jahickers! Billy was the wennir of the
BINGO zuiq. The priez was a trpi to Ypegt. He was so happy because it was his first trpi
abroad. The trpi to Ypegt was an incredible adventure.

When the time is up, they are to compare what they have done with the original text in the
book.

Activity 5: Listening to the interview...

Activity 7:. Checking comprehension:


- Who was on Billys plane to Egypt?
- How many hijackers were there?
- Who was armed? Etc

Activity 8: I'll pick few sentences from the text and translate them into Croatian. They are to
quickly find the matching English sentence in the text.

Gdje su bili otimai zrakoplova? Where were the hijackers?

Avion je bio pun putnika. The plane was full of passengers.

Otimai zrakoplova su bili naoruani. Hijackers were armed.

To je bio policajac na tajnom zadatku. That was all a policeman undercover.

Final part

Activity 9: Playing Bang Bang Game to reinforce vocabulary introduced in this lesson and
to revise the words they have learnt in the preceding lessons.

The group is divided into two teams. They are cowboys and they are involved in a duel. One
student from each team comes to the front. They pretend to draw their pistols. I say "how do
you say..." and a word in their mother tongue. The first child to give the answer and then
"bang bang", pretending to shoot his opponent is the winner. He remains standing and the
other one sits down.
