3 Interpeneetration of Solids

1. Introduction
Solids arre said to pennetrate each oother when ppart of it comp
mpletely enterrs into the othher solid. Ducts, pipe
joints, sm
moke stacks, boilers, conttainers, machhine castings etc., involvee intersectionn of surfaces. To
produce an accurate surface
s devellopment of solids, orthoggraphic drawiings of lines and curves oof
intersecttion of surfacces must be pprepared firstt. Figure 9.7 shows
s an exaample of inteersection betw ween two
cylinderss.

When booth cylinders are of the saame diameterr and on the ssame center llines, the linee of intersecttion will be
a straighht line.

Example: A horizontal cyylinder of diaameter 50 mm

E m and heightt 55 mm peneetrates into a vertical
c
cylinder of ddiameter 50 m mm and heighht 112 mm. T
The axes of thhe cylinders iintersect at rright angles.
D
Determine thhe intersectioon line.
