COURSE OUTLINE

DEPARTMENT: Department of Mechatronics Engineering

COURSE NAME: Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics & Pneumatics; (MT-338) CR : 3-1-4

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course deals with the preliminary concepts of fluid mechanics, Hydraulics &
Pneumatics. It is designed as a first course dealing with fluids (liquid and gases)
behavior in a simplified environment and deriving potentials. Fluid, properties, equation
of state, hydrostatics: manometry, principles of fluid motion: description of fluid flow;
continuity equation; Euler and Bernoulli equations, Introduction to Flow Analysis
Equations including Continuity Equation, Momentum Equations and Energy Equation.
Introduction to Reynolds number, laminar and turbulent flows: Reynolds demonstration
of flow regimes; criterion for laminar/ turbulent flow, Pipe flows, friction factor, friction
losses, etc. This course shall also introduce the basics of Hydraulics & Pneumatics with
the objective to provide an introduction into modeling and design of fluid power
components and systems. Modeling techniques based on physical laws and measured
performance characteristics will be applied to design and analyze component and
system performance.
