Field Report

Aim

To examine the differences in abiotic factors between a woodlands ecosystem and a wetlands
ecosystem.

To examine whether different abiotic factors have an effect on biotic factors present in each site

Method

As on practical sheet titled woodlands and wetlands ecosystem

Analysis and discussion:

Safety

There were a few different precautions that we thought about before heading down to the wetlands
and woodlands such as taking down any medication for those who need it and making sure we wear
appropriate and warm clothes to prevent any of us getting sick or hurting ourselves.

Methods

Some of the weaknesses we had to work around were trying to measure the depth of the creek as it
was quite wide and hard to get around. We overcame this because a member of the group brought
their gum boots which allowed us to get deeper into the creek to get the complete depth of the
creek. One of our strengths were because we had four people in our group it made the task easier
and quicker as we could all do a zone each and then at the end put all our results together. Another
thing that we found hard was to get complete accuracy with the flow of the water and the speed
would change all throughout the creek so measuring just one bit of the creek cant be the right
calculation for the entire river. To make this more accurate we could have gone to all different
points throughout the creek and then calculated the overall average to get as close as we could to
the actual flow of the creek. Another thing we found quite difficult is to measure the PH of the soil.
This was hard as no matter where we out it in the wetlands it said it was alkaline which cant be right
as the water would have to have some acid in it for the animals to survive around it. To improve the
results, we would have to get a more advanced device to get a more accurate result.

Results

The data that we collected after this experiment was mostly accurate. We resulted in different soil
temperate as in the woodlands the soil was a lot drier compared to the wetlands because in zone 1
of the wetlands there was heat trapped underneath the wet soil. The flow of the water was 2m/s. Commented [FH1]: That is an interesting point am not
When measuring the depth of the water it measured 74cm deep. The soil throughout both sure if the higher temperature is due to trapped heat under
the soil, but it very well could be. In such cases where we
environments are all alkaline so this factor would not change or effect the biotic factors in either are not entirely sure of the explanation, we can discuss
environment. There is a big significance between the abiotic and biotic factors within both about the possibility (eg. the higher soil temperature
ecosystems as if the abiotic factors did not exist then the biotic factors would not survive such as in recorded in zone 1 of the wetlands as compared to the
woodlands might be due to the trapping of heat by the wet
the wetlands the ground wasnt dry enough therefore there werent any ants visible compared to soil).
the woodlands. In the woodlands there were a lot more insects and once again I believe this could
Commented [FH2]: Yes good to also point out similarities
be because of the soil as they seem to like the dry soil over the moisture of the wetlands. Something
Commented [FH3]: This is a link well done
that surprised me in the transect profile was that we found reeds in all three sections of the
wetlands, I found this unusual because the moisture content of each zone was very different Commented [FH4]: Great to make such comments
especially between zone 1 and zone three as zone one was 8-9 and zone 3 was only 2, this suggest indicating anomalies or conditions that are unexpected, and
then trying to give an explanation for them
that the reeds that were living further away from the creek are still getting enough moisture to grow
further away from the creek. Commented [FH5]: Great link there

Collaboration and team work

In our group we didnt have individual roles and all did it together. This helped us all end up with the
same results and it was easy to discuss and talk as we all know each other quite well and get along as
good friends this made it easy for our group to get along and not have any issues along the way. We
all put effort into this practical so there were no issues of anybody not doing what they were
supposed to do. Towards the end when we felt like we werent going to be finished on time we
decided to split ourselves up over the three zones and get it done as quickly as possible

Conclusion

In this field project, we were to examine the differences between abiotic and biotic factors between
both types of ecosystems. We all worked well together as a team and managed to get the task done Commented [FH6]: To make the conclusion, it is always
in a functional and efficient manner. good to pick out the points mentioned in the result
discussion again, in a summarized form, so as to justify your
conclusion
