SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION PHY 167

Session 3

1) A particle has a mass of 1.8 105 kg and a charge of 3.0 10-5 C. It is released from
rest at point A and accelerates until it reaches point B (drawing). The particle
moves on a horizontal straight line and does not rotate. The only forces acting on
the particle are the gravitational force and an electrostatic force (neither is shown
in the drawing). The electric potential at A is 25 V greater than that at B; in other
words, VA - VB = 25 V. What is the translational speed of the particle at point
B?

2) At locations A and B, (DRAWING) find the total electric potential due to the two
point charges.

3) An electron is released from rest at the neative plate of a parallel plate capacitor and
accelerates to the positive plate (drawing). The plates are separated by a distance of 1.2
cm, and the electric field within the capacitor has a magnitude of 2.1 x 106 V/m. What is
the kinetic energy of the electron just as it reaches the positive plate?

4) During a ligting flash, there exists a potential difference of of 1.2 x 109 V between the
cloud and the ground. As a result, a charge of -25 C is transferred from the ground to the
cloud.
a) How much work is done on the charge by the electric force?
