CONFERENCE NEWS

People from around the world were welcomed to the Candu Owners Group (COG) 4th International In-service Inspection
Workshop and the NDT in Canada 2012 conference held June 18 - 21 at the Delta-Chelsea Hotel in downtown Toronto.
Over 200 people from Canada and other countries including Sweden, South Korea, China, India and the United States
attended the second collaborative effort hosted by the Candu Owners Group and the Canadian Institute for NDE (CINDE).
Their feedback said it was every bit as enjoyable and informative as the workshop / conference delivered in 2010.

Everyone at the event appreciated the support of the

Sponsors which included Level 3 sponsor Quality Control
Council of Canada for the Early Bird mix n mingle
reception, Level 2 sponsors Zetec for the print program and
Acuren Group for the Grand Prize Apple iPad. The Level
1 sponsors included the CINDE Ontario chapter for free
student passes, Mohawk College for the conference totes,
the Canadian Institute for NDE for the lanyards and USB
thumb drives, and NDT.net for the Conference Management
System (CSM) and digital e-proceedings.

People network and reconnect during the Early Bird Mix n

Mingle reception in the Exhibitor area while also learning
about many new products and services.

The plenary sessions at the beginning of each day featured

two thought-provoking presentations. During his discussion
about Applying NDE Reliability, Greg Selby of the Electric
Power Research Institute (EPRI) discussed a recent
example of significant cracks being missed during an in-
service inspection of a nuclear power plant in the USA and
the potentially significant consequences had they never
been found. Fortunately they were before any equipment
failure occurred and now an EPRI project is developing
a more robust approach to inspection qualification using
probability of detection and probability of correct sizing. Co-chairs Cindy Finley, National Chair of the Canadian
Institute for NDE and Evan Choi of the Candu Owners Group
welcomed and thanked the attendees for their support.
In his plenary session, Walter Weber from UTEX Scientific
Instruments shared his vision of Advances in Inspection
Automation, asking why NDT inspection isnt automated the same as other manufacturing processes. His experiences with
customer frustration with manual NDT practices definitely provided some food for thought, leading to one more question:
How automated can NDT become?.

The technical program had two tracks with sessions for

New Technologies, New NDE Applications, Operation
Experience, Engineering, Inspection Qualification and NDT
Training and Certification. The 50 presentations provided
valuable information from subject matter experts on topics
such as:
T. Zettervall; SQC Swedish Qualification Centre,
Inspection qualification and implementation of ENIQ
in Sweden
A. Tlaisi et al, Memorial University, Crack detection in
shafts using mechanical impedance measurements
L. Obrutsky et al,, AECL Chalk River Laboratories,

S. Yang; Ontario Power Generation, The Development
of Target Flaw Sizes and Acceptance Flaw Sizes for
CANDU Ferritic Piping Rick Robichaud discussing the potential impact of a
harmonized ISO 9712 standard.
M. Quarry; Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI),

The Career Zone had information from academic institutions

about their full-time NDT program offerings and an area for
job postings and resumes. It looked like there were a lot
more jobs available (postings were printed on yellow paper)
than there are people looking for employment in the field of
NDT. (resumes were printed in orange paper) This is good
evidence that now is the time to pursue or advance a career
Jobs outnumbered resumes in the Career zone. in nondestructive testing!

During the conference banquet the CINDE award winners were recognized for their technical and professional contributions
to the NDT community in Canada, along with students who received scholarships for their academic achievement. CINDE
Director Douglas Marshall presided over the awards ceremony, adding his personal reflections and congratulations to the
recipients who were: Doug Whitely, winner of the W. E. Havercroft award, John Baron, Robert Ginzel and David Mennie for
their CINDE Fellowship, and Ed Ginzel for his Technical Achievement award.
