Leadership and Management

Conflicting personal, Professional, and Organizational Obligations

You are Nurse Maria. You have been working on the oncology unit since your graduation
from the University of Cebu one year ago. Your supervisor, Leonara, has complimented your
performance. Lately, she has allowed you to be relief change nurse on the 3 PM to 11 PM shift
when the regular charge nurse is not there.

Occasionally, you have been asked to work on the medical/surgical unit when your
department has a low census. Although you dislike leaving your own unit, you have cooperated
because you felt you handle the other clinical assignments and wanted to show your flexibility.

Tonight, you have just come to work when to nursing office calls and requests that you
help out in the busy delivery room. You protest that you dont know anything about obstetrics
and that it is impossible for you to take the assignment. Carol, the supervisor from the nursing
office insists that you are the most qualified person; she says, she does not feel comfortable
advising you in this conflict. You feel torn between professional, personal, and organizational
obligations.

1. What should you do? Give your analysis of the situation

I believe that there is always a solution to every problem that arises. Here I can see that my role
as a nurse is in dilemma. I am supposedly to be assigned in the Medical Surgical Unit, but
what happened is that the delivery room has inadequate staff, thus requiring me to be transferred
there. The problem is I dont have adequate knowledge in the said area, since I have been
working in the oncology unit since I graduated. Nurses should be flexible, and thus I think I can
allow myself to be assigned there provided they would give me initial training/Endorsement
and someone who can supervise me while I am doing the procedures there.

2.Select the most appropriate conflict resolution strategy. Give rationale for your
selection and for your rejection of the others.
The most appropriate conflict resolution strategy that can be used here is Collaborating type of
conflict resolution. Here an individual is willing to work with the other party in order to find a
mutually satisfying solution. It creates a win-win situation. Such as in the situation where in I
accepted the role in the delivery room, but they must give me initial training, proper orientation
and supervision.
