AITSL standard 2- Know the content and how to teach it

Focus area 2.1: Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area

Situation:

For my maths lesson, giving directions, I wanted to make sure the content was
fun, engaging and easy for all children to follow.

Action:

I gave clear instructions for children to sit on the mat. I started the lesson by
quizzing children on the use of the compass and North, South orientations.
I then got two of the students to look for Tigger, the classroom plush toy, using a
compass I had provided and a set of instructions clearly stating starting position.

I wrote down the WALT and WILF on the board. I then handed out a worksheet
that involved knowing orientations (please see Figure 1a below), gave them time
to work on it then we went through it together.

Outcome:

The students loved using a physical tool and moving around the room. They
were successful in following directions and instructions and found Tigger! The
lesson started as a fun game and it proved to be a successful strategy in getting
the children interested in a maths lesson. They were eager to learn more about
directions and more focused on doing the worksheet.

Comments:

I wish we had more time for more students to have a go at using the compass.
