FULL ENVIORNMENT SET-UP PLANNING SHEET

Objectives:
The children will:
1. Communicate with others in a variety of ways, for a variety of purposes, and in a variety
of contexts (BC, 1)
2. Communicate their thoughts and feelings, and their theories through various art forms
(BC, 22)
3. Demonstrate independence, self-regulation, and a willingness to take responsibility in
learning and other endeavours (SRWB, 2)
4. Demonstrate an ability to use problem solving skills in a variety of contexts, including
social contexts (SRWB, 4)
5. Demonstrate literacy behaviours that enable beginning readers to make sense of a variety
of texts (DLMB, 9)
6. Demonstrate literacy behaviours that enable beginning writers to communicate with
others (DLMB, 10)
7. Demonstrate an understanding and critical awareness of media texts (DLMC, 12)
8. Demonstrate an awareness of natural environment through hands on investigations,
observations, questions and representations of their findings (DLMB, 14)

Learning Experience #1: Pumpkin Provocation


Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to create an inquiry centre that incorporates literacy skills
Materials: What do you see, What do you think, What do you wonder sheet, Record Ideas on
chart paper, Pumpkin books to inspire childrens thinking
Some questions to think about: I wonder what colour the pumpkin is inside? I wonder what is
inside the pumpkin? How many seeds are inside the pumpkin? Does the big pumpkin have more
seeds than the little pumpkin? How tall is the pumpkin?
Learning Experience #2: Cut Open the Pumpkin
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to allow the children to explore the pumpkin based on
their inquiry.
Materials: A sharp knife to cut open the pumpkin
Have children feel inside the pumpkin and document their findings on the Inquiry sheet
Some questions to think about: What do you see inside the pumpkin? How many seeds can you
find?

Learning Experience #3: Pumpkin seed math game


Purpose: This activity will develop the childrens numeracy skills by using a 100 chart to count
how many seeds they found in their pumpkin
Materials: 100 chart, dice, clean pumpkin seeds
Questions to think about: Which pumpkin has more seeds? How many seeds did we find in the
pumpkin?

Learning Experience #4: Jack o Lantern Deisgn


Purpose: The purpose of this acitvity is to enhance the children's creativity by using a vairety of
materials to deisgn the class jack o lantern
Materials: Gems, Tissue Paper, felt cut into shapes, write about the shapes you used to create
your jack o lantern, play dough
Questions to think about: What shapes did you use to create the jack o lantern? Is your jack o
lantern happy or angry?

Learning Experience #5: Write a story about the Jack o Lantern


Purpose: Have the children use their literacy skills to write about something they are interested in
Materials: Lets Write a story Template, Create a sheet with sentence starters such as:
My jack o lantern is . Big, small, round, heavy, orange
I like my jack o lantern because
My jack o lantern is. Happy, mean, angry, good, big, round
