Science: Natural Disasters Choice Board
Choose one task to complete from each row, starting with the first row and work your way down
Factual Report:
Write a factual report about either
an earthquake, tsunami or volcanic
eruption. This report should include
a classification explaining the
aspects of the topic, body
paragraphs where you provide a
greater understanding around the
disaster and a conclusion to review
what the report detailed. This is an
unbiased piece of writing which is
used to describe the facts.
Podcast:
Create a podcast discussing one of
the natural disasters. Imagine that
you are a researcher for your
chosen disaster and you are
discussing information and facts
about it, recent occurrences and
predictions for when the next
disaster will occur. This podcast
should be a minimum of five
minutes in length. Ask a friend to
be the one who is interviewing you.
Debate:
Choose one of the disasters and
design an argument to help you
debate why your chosen disaster is
the worst. Take into account all of
the facts and information about it,
how often and where they occur
and the damage that it has caused.
You will be debating against
somebody who has chosen a
different disaster.
Narrative:
Write a narrative about somebody
whose town was affected by a
tsunami or volcanic eruption. This
story should start before the
disaster struck and should discuss
the kinds of emotions the person
was feeling before, during and after
the disaster, the damage that
occurred and consider how it
impacted people around them. This
should be approximately 1 page in
length.
Model:
Design a to scale model of either an
earthquake, tsunami or volcanic
eruption. This can be created out of
any of the materials available in the
classroom or that you have at
home. The model should be
approximately 50 centimetres in
length and 20 centimetres in
height. It will accurately represent a
disaster in action.
Brochure:
Design a factual brochure that can
be used to inform people about
natural disasters. It will provide
information about one of these
disasters, the facts about it and
where it occurs, informing people
who may be interested in travelling
to the countries that it occurs in.
Venn Diagram:
Create three Venn diagram which
compares two of the disasters on
each diagram. These diagrams will
look at what makes two disasters
different and find out what they
have in common. Each disaster will
be compared and will result in the
following comparisons:
- Tsunami and earthquake
- Tsunami and volcanic
eruption
- Volcanic eruption and
earthquake
Poster:
Design a poster about one of the
disasters, illustrating what it looks
like, explaining where it occurs and
what causes it to happen. This will
be created on an A3 piece of paper
and needs to be written, organised
and designed neatly.
Oral Presentation:
Produce an oral presentation that
seeks to inform your audience
about the disaster that you have
chosen. The information should
look at where this disaster has
occurred, any recent occurrences,
why and how it occurs and any
other interesting information that
you can find. The PowerPoint
should be 15 slides in length.
