Mentor Assessment #1

Mentor: Dr. Iresh Kumar

Profession: Pediatrician
Date: 10/9/18
Time: 5:00pm 5:30pm
The main reason for this meeting was to inform Dr. Kumar of the differences are between
ISM 1 and ISM 2. This includes how we do assignments and how we develop our final product. I
also talked to Dr. Kumar about HOSA, Internships, and College Recommendation Letters. Since
it has been more than 3 months since I had a formal meeting with Dr. Kumar, I wanted to let him
know what I have done over the summer and during the 1st six weeks of the school year.
During the 1st six weeks I have done research on trauma and diabetes in kids and how we
can prevent such devastating fatalities. When I told Dr. Kumar about this, he was happy that I
still did some research about Pediatrics. For original work this year, I told Dr. Kumar that I have
the opportunity to work with other ISM students to develop a Final Product. Though I have not
fully considered this yet, I hope that with the guidance of two professionals and the cooperation
of a fellow ISM peer, we can create a truly unique product that has an impact on those in the
community. After this, I informed Dr. Kumar about some key details regarding the Winter
Showcase and Final Presentation Night just as a heads up.
Since I am the President of HOSA at Heritage, I am tasked with organizing meetings and
speakers. For a long time, our members wanted to have a Pediatrician as a speaker so I asked Dr.
Kumar if he would be willing to come and present for a HOSA meeting on November 8th. Dr.
Kumar said he would be happy to do this and will confirm this in the coming weeks. After this, I
asked Dr. Kumar about any internships that he might have or might know of in the community
of medical professionals. He said that I can come in watch the nurses take vitals, receptionists
ask patients questions about insurance and other specifics, and just see how the facility runs on
a daily basis. Dr. Kumar also said that he will ask other physicians that he knows about possible
positions for me. Finally, I told Dr. Kumar that I would really appreciate it if he could write me a
formal Letter of recommendation. He told me to email him a template that I prefer so that he can
create a Letter to my liking, yet still reflecting how he views me as a professional and a student.
The main goal of this meeting was to catch up on the months away from summer break
and talk about what I have done regarding research during that time. When it comes to my
Original work, I hope to work with a fellow ISM student, in or not in the same topic, to develop
a Final Product that reflects both fields of work. From here on out, I know that Dr. Kumar will
be a great resource to refer to in this ISM 2 journey. My main goal this year is to create
something unique and possibly life-changing. With the help of those in my community and the
connections that I have built through ISM, I know that this will not only be possible but
successful.
