BENCH FITTING
Secure the workpiece with clamps or in a machinists bench vise to keep it from moving or slipping.
Never force a tool by applying too much force.
Hacksaws should be adjusted in the frame to prevent buckling and breaking, but should not be tight
enough to break off the pins that support the blade.
Let each tool work at its design speed.
Use a brush to remove chips from files; do not use hands and fingers.
Do not handle the tools casually, these are sharp and can hurt the user
LATHE MACHINE
Do not leave the lathe running unattended.
Before making adjustments or measurements switch off and bring the machine to a complete
standstill.
Do not attempt to slow/stop the chuck or revolving work by hand.
Avoid letting swarf build up on the tool or job. Stop the machine and remove it.
Do not leave the chuck key in the chuck. Remove and put of safe place before starting lathe machine.
Do not keep tools and parts on top of the machine. Use side table to place the extra tools.
SHAPER MACHINE
Do not stand in front of the machine.
Never leave the machine unattended when machine is in operation.
Follow correct clamping procedures, keep overhangs as small as possible and check work piece is
secured.
Ensure correct speed and feed rate.
Ensure correct depth of cut has been set.
Switch off the machine and bring the machine to a complete standstill before making adjustments,
taking measurements or before cleaning swarf accumulations.
MILLING MACHINE
Keep clear of moving machine parts.
Never leave the machine unattended when it is running.
Follow correct clamping procedures- keep overhangs as small as possible and check workpiece is
secure.
Set the recommended speed for selected material.

Switch off the machine and bring to a complete standstill before making adjustments, taking
measurements or before cleaning swarf accumulations.
GAS WELDING
Check that the oxygen and acetylene regulators are in working condition.
Open cylinder valves very slowly to keep sudden high pressures from exploding the regulators. Purge
and check for constant gas flow.
Open the acetylene blowpipe valve slightly and light the blowpipe with a flint lighter.
Slowly open the oxygen blowpipe valve until a neutral flame is produced.
Close the acetylene blowpipe valve first then close the oxygen blowpipe valve.
Always close down both cylinder valves after welding.
ELECTRIC SHOP
Wear protective equipment and use insulated tools.
All electrical cords should have sufficient insulation to prevent direct contact with wires. Inform
Workshop staff is any damaged cords/insulation is found and not be used.
Electric tools should be used within their design limits.
Electric equipment should not be used in damp or wet locations.
Use recommended foot wear to avoid shock.
CARPENTRY SHOP
Do not talk to other operator or visitor while the machine is in operation.
Do not test saw teeth on hands or fingers it will cause injury.
Never force an object into moving parts to stop operation, it may damage the job or machine.
Do not use extra force on cutting tools.
