NOTES
TRADITIONAL WORSHIP
During the month of October we are focusing our
worship on various aspects of our historical heritage.
Each of the choral responses at the end of worship are
based on the sola we are focusing on that particular
Sunday. Today it is sola fide. The Call to Prayer this
morning was actually written by Martin Luther in
1523, drawing material from Psalm 130. Youll note
the rhythm of the piece is a little different than a
hymn. It has chant influence which has a more free
flowing rhythm and is not as metrical in the way we
are used to hearing. One of the significant impacts of
the Reformation was the rise of congregational singing
of psalms in the vernacular of the people rather than
priests chanting in Latin. Of course, like any major
change, it took place over a number of years. Isaac
Watts, the father of English hymnody, wrote our
opening hymn, O God Our Help in Ages Past, as a metrical
setting of Psalm 90. By Watts time, some 200 years
after the beginning of the Reformation, there appeared
hymns of human composure, that is, hymn that
were not based solely on a passage of Scripture, but
rather based on human thought or experience. When
I Survey the Wondrous Cross, also by Isaac Watts, would
be such an example. The bottom line in all of these
reformations was the gospel exploding into the
culture and a renewal of faith that transformed the
Western world. May the Reformation never cease! Sola
fide! -Dr. Dan Sharp

Pastor Irako Andriamahazosoa Ammi, known as Pastor

Ammi, is President of the Church of Jesus Christ in
Madagascar, (FJKM). The FJKM is the largest protestant
church in Madagascar with approximately 1,500
congregations. The FJKM was founded in 1968 and has
its roots in the missionary efforts of the London Missionary
Society, the French protestant mission, and the British
Quakers. In 2018, the FJKM will celebrate both the 50th
anniversary of the FJKM and the 200th anniversary of the
arrival of the first Christian missionaries to Madagascar. In
addition to a number of mission projects in Madagascar,
First Pres is investing $100,000 from the ARISE AND
BUILD Campaign towards a classroom building at the Ivato
Theological College as part of the 2018 celebrations.

500 years of reformation

Our Art Nouveau treatment of the Reformation sermon
series was inspired by the original Luther rose woodcut,
a seal designed for Martin Luther in the 1520s containing
a flower with five petals; as well as the integral role of
the printing press in the spread of Reformation ideas.
Thoroughly different from the austere interpretations of
Luthers time, the Art Nouveau movement (1890-1910)
nevertheless reflects a similar spirit: like the transformation
in religious art sparked by the Reformation, the Art
Nouveau movement sought to abolish the traditional
hierarchy of the arts, and recall the value of workmanship.

Each week we will feature a different design treatment of

one Sola: this week's, Sola Fide, features 10 five-petaled
flowers. The five petals represent the Luther Rose; and
one flower for each of the ten reformers featured in our
Reformation Chapel.
