Subject: TSF Embankment Seepage Analysis

1 INTRODUCTION

This Memo summarises the results of a seepage analysis completed for the tailings retaining embankment at
the Las Bambas Copper Mine.

The embankment design comprises a geo-composite lined rockfill structure. It will be constructed in stages,
and has a final design crest elevation of RL 4150 m. The stage 1 starter embankment, with a design crest
elevation of RL 4020 m is currently under construction.

2 PARAMETERS

The permeability adopted for the various materials that make up the embankment and foundation system
are summarised in Table 1.

Table 1 Material Permeability

Material Permeability (m/s)
Embankment Liner 1x10-20
Embankment Rockfill 1x10-3
Embankment Foundation (grouted) 5x10-7
Embankment Foundation (un-grouted) 5x10-6
Stored Tailings 1x10-8

The embankment liner is considered to be practically impermeable for the purposes of the seepage analysis,
and the permeability of the embankment rock-fill materials was conservatively considered to be
homogenous in nature, with no variation in permeability between the various zones.

The embankment foundation comprises granite rock in various states of weathering, and includes an (up to)
50m deep grout curtain located directly beneath the upstream toe of the embankment. The permeability of
the un-grouted foundation was estimated from lugeon testing completed as part of the foundation grouting
work, while the permeability of the grout curtain was assumed to be equivalent to 5 lugeon units, which is
the acceptance criteria for foundation grouting.

As a physical tailings sample is not available for testing, we have conservatively estimated the tailings
permeability based on prior experience with tailings of a similar nature. In practice, a lower value may be
applicable depending on the degree of consolidation that occurs, and the final grind of the production
tailings.

3 ANALYSIS AND RESULTS

The seepage analysis was completed with the software Seep/w. The following embankment states were
considered:-

(i) Stage 1A (RL 3974m) water storage only.

A pond RL of RL 3973m was adopted for this scenario.
(ii) Stage 1 (RL 4020m) 50% full with tailings, water storage over.
A tailings RL of RL 3974m and a pond level of RL 4015m was adopted for this scenario.
(iii) Stage 6 (RL 4150m) filled with tailings up to maximum allowable level with pond over. The geometry
of this scenario is illustrated in Figure 1, together with the location of sections selected for analysis.
For this scenario, it was conservatively assumed that the tailings body is saturated at all locations.

For each of the embankment states, a number of embankment sections were analysed to represent the
variation in embankment height for each stage (the location of the sections is illustrated in Figure 1). A
weighted average seepage quantity was then estimated for each of the embankment states considered. The
analyses assume uniform foundation conditions, and as such, the effect of unidentified unconformities in
the foundation are excluded.

The results of the analysis are summarised in Table 2. As well as the calculated seepage rate, a suggested
design range is presented to account for unknown foundation conditions and potential non homogeneity.

Representative output charts from Seep/w are provided in Figures 2 4, respectively, for each of the
embankment states assessed.

It is evident that the critical cases for seepage are the early stages where the storage is used solely for
containment of water only. When tailings deposition commences, the tailings form a low permeability liner
on the base of the impoundment, resulting in suppression of the seepage rate. In the long term, seepage
rates are predicted to slightly increase with time as the overall depth (and hence hydraulic head) of
saturated tailings increases.
