EM MWD TECHNOLOGY ENHANCES UNDERBALANCED
DRILLING EFFICIENCY IN MEXICO

1.- What is the main problem / subject that the paper is referring to?

The increase in unconventional drilling applications, such as UBD, has in turn led to
an increase in the need for EM MWD systems to be used in place of the more
conventional mud pulse technology MWD systems.

2.- What is the primary aim?

To provide an overview of an EM MWD system in addition to an overview of the

system itself and case studies outlining its operation, the paper describes how the
use of an EM simulator software package can assist in determining how to optimize
the set-up of the tool so as to ensure the transmitted data is received and decoded
at surface.

3.- What is the solution or new technology proposed to be apply to solve the
main problem?

UBD in hard formations can potentially increase the drilling speed and reduce the risk of lost
circulation and differential sticking.

EM MWD system to provide directional measurements in an underbalanced horizontal

drilling application. Since there are no moving parts associated with EM MWD systems there
is the potential for higher reliability than the corresponding mud pulse telemetry systems
4.- What are the results obteined? List at least five

Operators have used the EM MWD system on the project to drill over a dozen
short-radius horizontal wells using UBD techniques.

Well EBANO1070H in Mexico used recyclable nitrogen foam in an UBD

application using the EM MWD system to provide directional data while drilling

Examples of successful deployments of an EM MWD system, with services

provided by an independent Chinese service company in Mexico show how
the technology can be used to facilitate the exploitation of unconventional
reservoirs.

EM MWD systems offer a cost-effective solution for applications where

conventional mud pulse telemetry systems cannot be used.
NEW APPLICATIONS FOR UNDERBALANCED DRILLING
EQUIPMENT

1.- What is the main problem / subject that the paper is referring to?

The main problem is the use of clear drilling fluids and the philosophy to address well
control problems. Because horizontal operators in the fractured Austin Chalk of
South Texas realized that conventional drilling techniques were not economical this
in 1987 then the need for a nondamaging technique to drill and complete fractured
carbonates spawned the creation of flowdrilling (FD) and Underbalanced Drilling
(UBD).

2.- What is the primary aim?

It talk about the new applications for underbalanced drilling equipment, this mentions
that the Rotating Blowout Preventer is the principal equipment and it were developed
in Giddings, Texas area and how this equipment helped in this class of drilling. It said
us 3 cases when it used. The RBOP has objective the pressure controlled while
drilling.

3.- What is the solution or new technology proposed to be apply to solve the
main problem?

The RBOP was recommended to solve several problems that were encountered
while drilling this well. The fluids were being forced past the bottom hole assemblies
by the additional pressure that was applied at the surface.

The RBOP can safely contain annular surface while drilling logging, stripping casing
cementing operations are executed and it ensures the safety of the drill crew while
exploring the limits of drilling operations.
4.- What are the results obteined? List at least five

The RBOP and its associated control equipment is user friendly and can be
automated or manually controlled by the driller.

The RBO uses an inner and outer packer element. A secondary expendable
quick change packer QCP allows rotation of the drill string to occur while
sealing around the Kelly or drill pipe to prevent the escape pf fluids t the
surface.

The bop can be closed if the drill brigade loses control of formation fluids.

Are designed to be closed around the tubular components of the well (drill
column, casing or production pipe), and others have tempered steel breaking
surfaces that can traverse the drill column.
