Examination

The HT, together with the CFI, will be responsible for the preparation of
examination papers which shall contain at least 40 but not more than 100
multi-choice questions with 4 alternative answers, covering the ground
training syllabus. The number of questions must always be divisible by 4.
Approximately 60% of the questions shall be related to ME Piston operation,
with the balance relating to the specific aircraft type used for training. The
time allowed for the examination will be shown on the paper.
The pass mark will be 75% in each of the main subjects of the syllabus
examined.
The written examination paper must be passed before the Skill Test is taken
JAR Vol 5 (ME) Syllabus
MEI - General Flying - 1.1

Aim
To learn the general Flying characteristics of multi-engine
aircraft
Airmanship
Lookout
Ts&Ps
Autopilot (if available) Usage must be known
MEI - General Flying - 1.2

Taxying - 1
Hot Engine Starts
Props - Strikes
Differential Power & Brake
be careful of tearing tyre off its rim
Heavier aircraft
Slowly
Seat Position - ensure full rudder movement
MEI - General Flying - 1.3

Taxying - 2
Position for Power Checks
Prop wash
Will brakes hold - a/c moving forward
Occasionally brakes against power to be avoided, but sometimes
required because better to wear out brakes than the engine
MEI - General Flying - 1.4

Take-Off
T/O Self Brief - Single Crew
TOSS / V2
Gear Up - Unless you can land back on
Know/Check gear up speed limitations
Throttles - Long Pull - Short Pull
Make sure right gauge
Make sure not to fixate
Rejected Take Off Mandatory in test schedule
MEI - General Flying - 1.5

Climb
Beware of busting controlled airspace (increased RoC)
Big buffer required ie 2000, 2200
Nudging throttles as A/C climbs
Will use 100kts, but this is not Best Rate
Local Procedures
Noise abatement
MEI - General Flying - 1.6

Cruise
Will often pitch up higher in climb because of what
student is used to
Synro Props
Will not be in-line
Use sound
Adjust one
Lean Mixture
Alt - Frequent checks on ALT and VSI
Gentle Manoeuvres
MEI - General Flying 1.7

Descent
Throttles 15-17 - for 500fpm
Leave Prop and Mixtures as they are
Pitch for Speed - ie 120kts - monitoring
Avoiding throttles too low, for engine management
Monitor Manifold Pressure
Anticipate with 10% of RoD
MEI - General Flying 1.8

Circuit
Slow Entry
Slow Safe
20, 1 Flap, Gear
Cant just be using the gear to airbrake
129 gear limiting speed
Get ahead of game, plan descent
MEI - General Flying 1.9

Stalls
Dont apply full power too quickly
asymmetric concerns
Gear Warning horn will activate
For first stall - clean stall
