In Lucknow, migrates who had been waiting for the train in silence leapt to
their feet when they heard it. They rushed toward the train as it slowed down, and
crowded around it . Before long , the train was moving toward Mumbai.
When night fell, the passengers settle in . Most were migrants--- most were
men. Some sat on wooden benches ---- others lay on the floor. A few climbed into
the luggage shelf near the ceiling.
New migrants spoke to the experienced ones.
Manu Gupta, fifteen, was travelling with a friend from his village. If he can find
work in Mumbai, Manu will become his family's breadwinner. "I'm happy, he said,
and I'm scared. "
Nearby, Sandeep Misra, eighteen, would not confess to being scared. But he
had every reason to be , because he had run away from home, with no one to help
him.
Friends from Mumbai called him, asking him to move to the city. So he got on
the train for the City of Gold, as Mumbai is often called, with the clothes he was
wearing, an empty wallet and a cell phone Sim card.
