Whenever I drive or commute to school or any parts of Cavite or Alabang, there will always be presence of
children along the sidewalk. They are sitting in the sidewalk waiting for the red light and go to vehicles door
to door asking for coins or sometimes other kids would be selling nuts or pamunas.

sometimes other children would be selling nuts or pamunas. When asked, they would tell you that it is for
their baon for school. Sometimes, I wonder if these children are asked by their parents to beg for coins or are
they abandoned by their parents.

Poverty has always been a problem in the Philippines,

[SEEK HELP]
A lady jumped to death in a mall in Mandaluyong, a lady was also found unconscious in a female restroom
I recently lost a friend because of depression. She was someone I thank dearly because my teenage
years wouldnt be as fun as it could be. She introduced me to ates (or older sisters?) and same-aged friends
whom I can still consider as very good friends of mine even after 10 years.
It was September 28 when I saw my friends post in a popular social media website. The message was,
when everyone in the world is struggling to survive, there is one person who will carelessly tell you to die, attached to it was
screen capture, a photo of a guy, cellphone number and a link to the guys social media account. However, I
never thought that it was that bad. September 29, a news circulated that a car fell down from a parking lot in
Manila and lady was found inside the car. After a few hours, a mutual friend confirmed that it was her inside
the car. She committed suicide. Looking back at her posts, she has been fighting for love that lead to depression.
There were people who tried to reached her, but she ignored it.
I felt sad and thought that I lost the opportunity to help someone I know who is having a hard time in
life.
According to Mayo Clinic, depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness
and loss of interest. It affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical
problems. Sometimes, you may feel as if life isnt worth living.
It can happen to anyone and at any age. It isnt a weakness and you cant simply get away out of it. It
may require long-term treatment but that shouldnt discourage you.
Cause of depression are not known exactly. It may be from biological differences, brain chemistry,
hormones or inherited traits. Depression is a serious disorder that is associated with complications if not treated
or known as soon as possible to physical illness, excess weight which could lead to heart disease, alcohol or
drug misuse, anxiety, social isolation, suicidal tendencies, self-mutilation, or premature death.
Depression is not a laughing matter, nor a made up feeling by someone who is diagnosed of it.
Recently, a famous host/comedian said on national television that depression is something made up
and interjected to not support it. Also, the said host noted how the rich and the poor handle mental health
issues. It was harsh and a very sensitive remark as he was on national television, viewed by millions of people.
To note, he was interviewing someone who was medically diagnosed with depression. It is disappointing that
some people think of depression as some kind of an act or make-believe situation in order to call for attention
or compassion.
Filipinos are known for being resilient and humorous amidst pain and personal suffering. It has been
in our culture to be joyous, happy and positive which makes it difficult to talk about depression or mental
illness. It is usually taken for granted, people who possibly have depression would disregard his or her feelings
and treat it as nothing.
Due to the lack of awareness, people
The World Health Organization defined Mental Health as a state of well-being in which every
individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively
and fruitfully, and is able to make contribution to her or his community.
The Department of Health launched a hotline that will provide mental health concerns. Partnered
with Natasha Goulbourn Foundation for the HOPELINE Project, which is a 24/7 crisis support hotline for
depression and suicide prevention.
