Lesson 3: Emergent Literacy

Emergent Literacy is about how a child interacts or reacts with

books, printed texts, pictures and other reading materials. In this lesson I
learned that at young age of a child he or she can already respond to
books and other reading materials through interaction. Also, I learned that
there are different tips on what should parent and teachers do to
encourage emergent literacy. For this reason I have already knowledge
on how to support the development of childs literacy. The techniques or
tips we need to as a future parent and teacher we should always provide
activities that gives opportunity to a child to learn, activities which they
can relate and engage, we should expose them to picture books, books,
and reading materials, we should also talk to them and read them stories
and in their everyday living we should teach them new vocabulary words
especially the thing that they sees in their environment.

What did the lesson lead me to understand? It leads me to

understand that parents and home has the very crucial role in developing
the literacy of a child. Its because literacy is not necessarily begin in
school but it begins at birth. Also, I understand now why a young child is
very attentive or curios when they see pictures and books. However, it
makes me realize that different activities and what a child sees in their
environment can contribute in literacy of an individual.
 Lesson 4: Reading Readiness

The insights I gained..

Reading readiness is a process that prepares a child for reading. We

can identify a child learns to read when he or she can read perfectly.
Also, there are some indicators that can be used for us to be guided to
know if they are ready to read like if the child: pretends to be a reader,
can share and story tell what is happening, turn pages of books even if
they dont know what is the content of the book, enjoy listening stories,
focuses on pictures on the books and etc.

What did the lesson entice me to do.

Knowing the indicators of if a child is ready read is very important

and it takes me to advantage like to think a different strategy on how I
can develop the reading readiness of a child. Also, different activities
that can engage to read and learn basic concepts about reading.

What new discoveries I make.

The new discoveries that I learned in this lesson what are the parent
and teachers can do to help a child become ready to read like they
should read familiar books and creating stories. For this reason, as a future
teacher the discoveries that I make that can benefit to my future career
is that I should write different stories that can catch the attention a child.
Also, through singing them a nursery rhymes and teaching them on how
to sing it.
 Lesson 5: Beginning Reading

The insights I gained

Teaching beginning readers has different strategies and methods

that can be used but there is no best method. Because learners are all
diverse in terms of learning styles, needs, backgrounds and etc. But, there
is effective method and activities that can be done by teachers where
readers can acquire interest in reading. Like, we should consider how to
teach not only what to teach. However we should also aware to those
skills that a beginning readers have like recognition of shapes, names,
numbers, and child can name things around him or her, sounding a letters
and etc. Aside from being aware, I also learned different methods that
are new to me where it can contribute to my future career in teaching
beginning readers. These methods are word wall, rhyming words, stop at
the vowel sound and etc.

The lesson that makes me feel realize

Reading teachers has a very crucial role in the reading process

especially in elementary level where it is the foundation of the education.
Reading teachers has different characteristics and qualities that can be
considered for them to be possess like being pedagogically equipped,
assessing students progress, flexible, model behaviors and good reading
coaches. As a future teacher I must develop these different qualities for
me to become an excellent reading teacher. Also, I must be observable
to myself and students for me to become a highly skilled reading teacher.
 Lesson 6: The Four Pronged Approach
to Teaching Beginning Reading

The insights that I gained in this lesson

The four-pronged approach is a systematic literature-based for

beginning readers. It has four separate parts: (1) Developing Love for
Reading where it is about generating emotional response for reading; (2)
Developing Critical and Creative Thinking where it aims to develop the
critical thinking and creative thinking of a learners; (3) Grammar and Oral
Language Development it is about developing a grammatical awareness
of a readers and; (4) Transfer Stage it focuses on word recognition
vocabulary expansion and etc.

The lesson that entice me to do

As a future teacher I should first developed the childs love for

reading for him/her be interested in reading. I will also develop effective
strategies that can catch their attention and interest to listen, learn, read
and write.

The new discoveries that lesson lead me to do

The other approaches that can be used in teaching beginning

reading which the basal reader approach, literature-based approach,
language experience approach and balanced approach. It makes me
realized and discovers that teaching beginning reading is a systematic
process and progress and to achieve this I must read different stories to
the learners which are non-fiction and fiction and relate it to their
environment and experiences.
 Lesson 7: Developing Love for
Reading

After finishing this lesson I discovered

Nowadays a lot of us, especially the youth are not interested in

reading. Its because social media like television and the internet have
been the popular source of entertainment in todays generation. But for
me reading is very engaging and enjoying because through reading I
learn and it my vocabulary expands. I love reading! Especially if the
information was new to me and talks about the health of humans, fiction,
short stories, fairytales and etc.

As a future teacher I will share my experience about reading for

them to realize that reading is very useful. I will also give different social
issues today for them to read about it and share it to the class. I will also
read stories to them if there is enough time before or after the class
sessions. Most of all I should be a role model to my learners and to my
future child.
