NOUNS AND PRONOUNS INDEFINITE PRONOUNS AND ADVERBS
(Review and Expansion)

SOMEBODY (SOMEONE) / SOMETHING / SOMEWHERE

We use somebody, someone, something, and somewhere when we refer to an indefinite


person, thing, or place in affirmative sentences.

Were looking for somebody / someone new.


Something is wrong with that machine.
The manager must be somewhere in the building.

We also use something and somewhere when we offer or ask for something.

Can I get you something to drink?


Would you go somewhere for me?

ANYBODY / ANYONE, ANYTHING, ANYWHERE

We use anybody, anyone, anything, and, anywhere in general questions.

Can anybody / anyone give me a hand?


Do we have anything for dinner?
Will you go anywhere on vacation?

We also use anybody, anyone, anything, and anywhere in negative sentences.

You mustnt tell anybody / anyone this secret.


He couldnt think about anything at that moment.
Im not going anywhere tonight.

NOTE: We can use pronouns and adverbs beginning with any in affirmative sentences
when we talk about more than two alternatives or choices

You can invite anybody / anyone you want to the party.


Anything that you decide is fine with me.
You can go anywhere you want in the club.

NOBODY / NO ONE, NOTHING, NOWHERE

We use nobody, no one, nothing, and nowhere in affirmative structures that have a
negative meaning.

Nobody / No one will ever find the treasure.


Theres nothing we can do to reverse the situation.
Im planning to go nowhere these holidays.

EVERYBODY / EVERYONE, EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE

We use everybody, everyone, everything, and everywhere in affirmative sentences,


negative sentences, and questions when we refer to all people, things or places in a
particular situation.

Everybody / Everyone has been invited to the ceremony.


Im going to get everything ready for the camping trip.
Weve looked everywhere for the kitten with no luck.

Be Careful!

Although indefinite pronouns referring to people are followed by singular verbs when they
are in subject position, the appropriate substitute pronoun must be a plural.

Everyone is ready, arent they?


Nobody knew the answer, did they?
If you love somebody, let them go.

Indefinite pronouns referring to things take a singular substitute pronoun.

If you need something, go get it.


Nothing is wrong, is it?
