Supervisor Observation Reflection #1

Based on my overall feelings following the execution of the lesson and the reviewing of

the video of my lesson I can confidently say that I feel my lesson went fairly well and I am

happy with my implementation of the lesson and the students engagement in the lesson. The

students responded well to the lesson and reacted well due to the close similarity of the flow of

the lesson with their average everyday lessons they participate in.

There are numerous things that occurred in my lesson that I felt went smoothly and that I

liked. One minute and fifty-five seconds into my lesson I was able to use the strategy of hand

signals with one of my ELL students to help her understand to put her marker cap on. At 9:38 I

initiated the class into accountable talk as the students presented their answer on their white

board and discussed together why the answer was correct. At 11:22 the students spoke loudly

towards their friend, disagreeing with her answer by saying NOO! and I reminded them to

speak kindly or use a thumb up or thumb down instead when disagreeing with someones

answer. My students also expressed that they liked the use of their names in the word problems

that I presented to them during the whole group instruction and their group work. They liked

having their names in their word problems because it made them less intimidated by the fact it

was a word problem and they were able to imagine themselves in the situations described in the

word problem. I think my lesson ran smoothly and was a good combination of both student and

teacher led instruction, and whole class work and group work. I also feel that I did a fine job

managing my students as they worked. During the whole-class work I did a good job making

sure that the students were focused and participating in the activity and during group work I

walked around and facilitated instruction.

My positivity and confidence in my lesson is matched by the things that I am still

working on improving as a preservice teacher. Most of my lessons weaknesses are based on

organizational issues. For instance, in the beginning of the lesson the students were spending a

large amount of time looking for the perfect marker instead of just grabbing one and sitting

down. Next time I plan on passing the markers out myself to avoid the large pile of students

huddling around the box of whiteboard markers. At 13:45 there was an organizational mess of

students putting away their markers and whiteboards, and getting into their groups to work on

their group word problem. Next time I would change my release of the students in a more

organized manner. I also the use of manipulatives was slightly unorganized also due to the

classrooms previously designed method of getting manipulatives. This inorganization may have

been avoided if I was in my own classroom with my own instructions of the use of

manipulatives. In the future I would have to have specific manipulatives set up prior to the lesson

starting. In the future as I incorporate more literature into my math lessons I would like to choose

books that have more of a plot to them instead of having just word problems.

After reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of my lesson I have a few goals to keep

in mind for my future lessons, these include: time management, transition organization, and more

use of student centered/lead learning.

Here are a few images of the students group work that they worked on.
