Contrast words

1) But (pero)
She was ill but she went to work.
2) Although, Though, Even though + subject+ verb (aunque)
All of them come either at the beginning or in the middle of a complex sentence.
Although it was raining, we went for a walk.
If the contrast word comes at the beginning of a sentence, we put a comma between the dependent and
independent sentence. On the contrary, we dont use a comma after the contrast word if it comes in the middle.
We decided to buy a car although it was very expensive.
3) However / Nevertheless
They comes at the beginning of a sentence, and they are followed by a comma.
I`ve been running for an hour. However, I`m not tired.
4) PP- In spite of / Despite + noun + V-ing (a pesar de)
In spite of the rain, we went for a walk.
Despite of her good marks, she is worried about her final exam.
In spite of being ill, he went to work.
Despite being ill, he went to work.
5) In spite of the fact that / Despite of the fact that + subject + verb (a pesar del hecho que)
In spite of the fact that he arrived late, he didnt miss the train.
6) On the one hand, .On the other hand, (por una parte,. por otra, .)
On the one hand, London is a city with lots of things to do. On the other hand, it is too big.
7) While / Whereas + subject + verb (mientras que)
We use these contrast words to join two sentences with a comma between them.
This hotel admits pets, whereas this other one doesn`t.
8) PP- In contrast to / Contrary to + noun + pronoun + V-ing (a diferencia de)
In contrast to other books, this one is very boring.
9) In contrast (por el contrario)
It comes at the beginning of a sentence and is followed by a comma.
Unemployment fell in Germany last year. In contrast, it rose in Spain.
10) On the contrary (al contrario)
A: Thought you hated rock music.
B: On the contrary, I love it.
