0 Objective
1. To be able to use Constraint Toolbar for assembling parts in Assembly Design workbench.
2. To understand concept of assembling part in CATIA.
3. To finish design by assembling parts in Assembly Design workbench.

2.0 Introduction

The Assembly Design Module is responsible for assembling the part previously produce in
Part Design and is the most important part for designing process in general. Assembly
modelling is the process of creating design that consist of two or more components assembled
together at respective work position. The two component are brought together and assembled
in Assembly Design workbench by applying suitable parametric assembly constraints to them.

Inserting Existing Components:

This task will show you how to import one or more components into an existing assembly. The
order in which files will be imported when selecting the files can be specify in Existing
Component dialog box.

Constraint Toolbar:
The geometrical constraints are used to constrain the orientation of one element relative to
another.

Coincidence Constraint:
Coincidence type constraint are used to align elements. Depending on the selected elements,
you may obtain concentricity or planarity. This task consists in applying a constraint between
two faces.

Contact Constraints:
Contact type constraints can be created between two planes or faces. The common area
between the two planes can be plane (plane contact), a line (line contact) or appoint (point
contact).

Fixing a Components:
Fixing a component means to preventing this component from moving from its parent
component during the update operation. To fix the component location according to the
geometrical origin of the assembly, check fix in space in constraint Properties dialog box.
3.0 Procedure
Getting Started
1. Select the Start -> Mechanical Design -> Assembly Design command to launch the
required workbench.
2. The Product1 is renamed to connector assembly in Properties dialog box.

Inserting an Existing Component

3. The Connector Assembly in the specification tree is selected.
4. The icon below is clicked in the Product Structure Tools toolbar.
The File Selection dialog box is displayed.
5. The CATASMConnector_Shell.CATPart and
CATASMConnector_Card_Assembly.CATProduct by using the [ctrl] key is selected.
6. To duplicate the shell for the bottom part of the connector assembly, the Connector Shell
is copied and pasted into the Connector Assembly.
7. The Connector Shell 1 then renamed to Top Shell and Connector Shell 2 is renamed to
Bottom Shell in the top Instance name field.

Fixing a Component
8. To fix the card assembly in space (so that it will become the reference element), the
Connector Card Assembly component in the tree or in the geometry is selected.
9. Then the fix icon clicked to fix the component selected.

Moving Constrained Components Using the Compass

10. The compass is dragged by selecting the red patch at the center of the compass onto the
surface of component and clicked on component until it turns green. As the compass is
snapped to the component, the component can be manipulate.
11. The component is arranged so that the card assembly is in between the top shell and bottom
shell. Also the orientation of each components prior to assembly was manipulate such as
reposition the 2 shells with respect to the Card, rotate both of them 180 degrees on the xy
plane of the compass.

5.0 Discussion
When completing the task we noticed that to insert a component into the assembly workbench
has various way, such as using existing component icon or File option and copy and paste
existing component. Secondly, the component can be manipulate freely using compass by
placing it on the surface of the component, but the weakness of compass is it cannot be placed
on the curve surface such as cylinder. Thirdly, the coincidence constraint can be used to align
the component prior to the assembly minimally as two point needed to be align. Fourth, the
anchor icon represent to fix the component as parent to the child component to be constraint,
this mean the child component will move toward the parent component. Lastly, the contact
type constraint must be carefully selected as it can be selected by point, edge and surface. To
do so we must zoom and rotate the component in various degree to be able to select the surface.

6.0 Conclusion
In conclusion, the objective of this laboratory session are successfully reached as we are able
to use Constraint Toolbar for assembling parts in Assembly Design workbench such as
coincidence type constraint, contact type constraint and fix component icon to accomplish the
task. Next, understand concept of assembling part in CATIA such as Entering the Workbench,
Fixing a Component, Inserting an Existing Component, Setting Constraints, Moving a
component, Adding and Renaming a New Component. Last but not least, were able to finish
design by assembling parts in Assembly Design workbench even we facing many problem at
beginning such as using compass to move component and constraint component together.
