A month-long initiative designed to

help families in need with school sup-
plies kicked off Aug. 1 in Strathmore.

some kids at the start of the school year
that didn’t have the supplies they need-
ed to start the school year. We wanted
to give them the tools they needed to
do well in school,” said Gord Morck,
manager of Value Drug Mart in Strath-
more.
Each year during the month of Au-
gust, people can wander through dif-
ferent Value Drug Mart locations gath-
ering school supplies to donate, while

can leave their donations. There are

could donate and it could be given to
the schools anonymously,” said Morck.

Many people have jobs they like but
just aren’t doing what they would love
to do. Most people would likely stay at
their current job anyway instead of tak-
ing a risk and a leap into something
they love. Jeremy Goertz is one of the
rare few who, once realizing he wasn’t
in love with his work, decided to take
the risk and it paid off.
“A lot of it had to do with, I turned
30 this year and I mean I had a really
great job with really great people but I
didn’t love what I did and so I thought,
you know what life is short, if there’s
something you want to try, you may as
well go for it,” said Goertz.
Goertz was recently

Fall Fair keeps fun in Gleichen

The 26th annual Gleichen Fall Fair
takes place from August 20 to 22, with
most of the fun and excitement taking
place on Saturday the 21. The day will be

The parade starts at 10 a.m. and peo-

“We’re hoping to have 75 (entries) or
so like we did last year,” said Alice Booth,
a councillor for Wheatland County and
an organizer of the parade.
This will be the second year for the
bed derby. Last year there were four en-
tries and Booth said they are at six so far
this year.
“Years ago, for fun, people used to
make up a bed and get somebody into
the bed and four people would push it
and they would race to see who could
get to the finish line first,” said Booth.

Bypass will significantly affect the town

It seems as though someone is always
talking about the realignment lately and
about how it has affected other towns.
One thing no one has heard is exactly
how Vegreville and other towns have
been affected. Paul Ventura is the own-
er of Canadian Tire and his first store
as a Canadian Tire dealer was the Veg-
reville location in 2000. Vegreville has a
highway bypass, which was implement-
ed years ago.
“It was not as far away from Highway
16 as the proposed bypass for Strath-
more but it still had a significant effect
on the town,” said Ventura.
Ventura was in Vegreville for a year
and a half, he has talked to a lot of
people and when they did the bypass it
killed the town.
“Basically it prevented businesses
from growing and expanding including
the Canadian Tire there,” said Ventura.
“I do know that the bypass in Veg-
reville significantly hurt the town and
significantly hurt a lot of the businesses
including gas stations, restaurants, that
sort of thing.”
In Lloydminster there was an over-
pass implemented instead of a bypass.
Both towns have roughly the same size
Canadian Tire store.
“I found it very interesting that Lloyd-
minster is doing much better than Veg-
reville and that has a lot to do with the
bypass,” said Ventura.
Ventura said about 25 to 30 per cent
of his business is from people driv-
ing by and stopping into the store. He
employs between 60 to 75 people and
wants to continue growing business
here, but said the bypass will hurt the
town big time.
“Yes, they say it’s 10 to 15 years out,
but as a business owner, and looking at
all the other businesses in town, you’re
not going to invest in other businesses
coming into town when they see a by-
pass on the horizon,” said Ventura.
In an August 13 interview the Minister
of Transportation Luke Ouellette said
his office was now looking at keeping
the bypass close to the town so people
would be able to see the highway busi-
nesses.
“Visible and convenient are two dif-
ferent things. I don’t think it’d be a big
issue as long as people can still get here
conveniently,” said Ventura.
Ventura would like to see an over-
pass put into place if anything has to

Looking for talent

Aspen Crossing Theatre will be holding auditions for its
2010-2011 Dinner Theatre season on August 29 from 2-5
p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Those wishing to audition may come to
one of the two audition times and should bring a resume
and photo, as well as have prepared one monologue.
The audition will include some scene-work, improvisa-
tion skills are essential and accents are an asset. The cast-
ing will be for six shows during the season, so a variety of
actors will be needed. Shows are evenings and weekends,
but there is one weekday matinee show during the Christ-
mas season, requiring older actors, both male and female
who will be available during the afternoon.
All shows will be performed at Aspen Crossing in Moss-
leigh. Questions can be directed to Gail Whiteford at Gail-

Government of Canada to Crack Down

on Human Smuggling Operations

down on human smuggling
operations and prevent further
abuses of Canada’s generosity
towards refugees.
Sorenson says, “I agree with
the high level of concern and
outrage expressed by my con-
stituents over the recent landing
of the foreign vessel MV Sun
Sea with 490 refugee claimants
on Canada’s west coast. Clearly,
the intent is to take advantage
of our compassionate treatment
of refugees. I agree with calls
for our government to follow
through on our commitment to
prevent these incidents from re-
peating in the future.”
Canadian security and pub-
lic health officials are provid-
ing updates on the processing
under Canadian law of those
who were found aboard the
ship which is suspected to be
part of a large human smug-
gling operation. The passengers
were found to be in better than
expected condition after hav-
ing had access to food, water
and elaborate sanitation facili-
ties during the three month op-
eration. Passengers are being
processed by Canada Border
Services Agency officials under
Canadian law.
“As we deal with this current
situation under Canadian law,
Minister Toews has his Depart-
mental officials examining all
available options to strengthen
our laws in order to address this
unacceptable abuse of interna-
tional law and Canadian gener-
osity. Human smuggling is a de-
spicable crime and any attempts
to abuse Canada’s generosity for
financial gain are utterly unac-
ceptable,” Sorenson concludes.

RCMP Briefs
A. Here is a monthly review of
Crime Statistics for the Gleichen/
Siksika area
1. Person crimes, which in-
clude assaults, sex assaults, utter
threats, and robbery etc., From
July 1, 2010 to July 31, 2010 there
were 58 person related crimes re-
ported.
2. Property Crimes including
thefts, vandalism, theft of mo-
tor vehicles, possession of stolen
property, and break and enters etc.
July 1, 2010 to July 31, 2010 there
were 92 reported property related
crimes reported.
3. Criminal code traffic offences,
which include impaired driving,
July 31, 2010 there were 13 report-
ed Criminal Code traffic offences
reported to police.
4. There were 41 reported pro-
vincial liquor offences in the month
of July.
5. Crime prevention and other
assistance provided to the gen-
eral public. These activities include
abandoned vehicles, suspicious
persons, animal calls, etc. In the
month of July, 2010 there were 77
calls of this nature.
B. In the last few months Glei-
chen detachment had experienced
some significant staff changes with
summer transfer season. Two more
members are scheduled to transfer
back Staff Sargent GOLLAN who
has returned from a long overseas
mission.
C. Once again the Gleichen
RCMP detachment fielded a team
for the Gleichen Canada Day soft-
ball tournament. The event this year
was successful with good weather,
plenty of food, and some friendly
but competitive softball matches.
D. Once again we are approach-
ing the Pow Wow season which is
a very busy time of year for the de-
tachment and Siksika Nation. Glei-
chen RCMP and the organizers of
the Pow Wow have been working
together to make plans for security

Cyber Safety for
Kids of All Ages
With the first decade
of the 21st century now a
thing of the past, historians
can look back on the last
10 years and begin reflect-
ing on the decade’s most
memorable moments.
Historians can also begin
looking at what changed in
the last 10 years, and which
trends made the biggest im-
pact. Perhaps nothing made
a greater impact than the
Internet. Though prevalent
at the end of the 20th cen-
tury, the Internet became
even more so during the
first decade of the 21st cen-
tury, changing nearly every
facet of society along the
way.
While the Internet made
things easier in many ways,
it’s made things more dif-
ficult in more subtle ways
as well. Take, for example,
kids and the Internet. While
computers were once a
place for kids to play games
and write papers for school,
nowadays the household
computer is a means to
reaching a whole new
world, one that isn’t always
so safe for kids. That real-
ity highlights the impor-
tance parents must place
on safeguarding their kids
from the ills of the Internet.
Fortunately, there are sev-
eral steps parents can take
to keep kids of all ages safe
from whatever or whoever
might be lurking online.
* Establish a list of Web
sites that are on and off
limits. Parents must talk
to kids about the nature
of the Internet, and how
some Web sites are geared
toward adults and some are
more kid-friendly. When
having this discussion, ask
kids why they might go on-
line, and from there parents
and children can begin to
establish a list of Web sites
that are acceptable, and
those that are off limits.
Parents can even safeguard
access to Web sites outside
the realm of what they’ve
deemed acceptable by es-
tablishing passwords to get
on certain sites.
* Don’t share passwords
and change them regularly.
Nowadays, more and more
sites require passwords to
gain full access. E-mail ac-
counts, social networking
sites, online banking, and
even online retailers require
a password. Kids and adults
alike should always keep
these passwords secret and
change them regularly. Do
not use the same password
for every Web site. If any-
thing seems out of the ordi-
nary or if you feel security
might have been breached,
immediately contact the
Web site and change the
password.
* Do not share personal
information. Today’s kids
are growing up in an en-
vironment that’s seemingly
less private than ever be-
fore. Social networking Web
sites have made it common-
place to share information
easily and without much
discretion. However, this
has the potential to be very
dangerous for younger and
older kids alike. Younger
kids could be unknow-
ingly making themselves
accessible to online preda-
tors, while older kids, even
those in college, should be
made aware that prospec-
tive employers have begun
to visit social networking
sites to research an ap-
plicant’s background. The
more that’s shared online,
the less privacy a user has.
So it’s best to exercise dis-
cretion whenever sharing
information online.
* Do not arrange to meet
anyone you have met on-
line. Though older kids
might feel they have enough
wits about them to avoid
falling victim to an online
predator, it’s precisely that
attitude of invincibility that
online predators count on.
Younger and older kids
should never meet an on-
line acquaintance without
first discussing it with their
parents. Simply because
someone says they’re some-
thing online doesn’t mean
they are, and many a hor-
ror story has resulted from
online predators taking
advantage of trusting kids,
young and old, and even
adults.
* Beware of online virus-

on any pop-up windows or opening
any e-mails from mailers they don’t
recognize.
Even toddlers know how to go online, a fact that
only highlights the importance parents must
place on cyber safety.

Geraldine Grant and Val Heck had their heads shaved outside of Sobeys to raise money for
cancer and diabetes. Grant was doing it for cancer but said diabetes is every bit as deadly as
cancer. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a penny you donate or $1,000. It could be the penny that finds
the cure,” said Grant. Marshall Billings, an employee at Sobeys decided to get his head shaved
with the women. “Anything I can give back to support a cause is good for me,” said Billings.

Being extremely fit and in superb
shape is not a necessity to have taken
part in the Strathmore Women’s Triath-
lon as Janice Sumner learned. Last year
Sumner and her friend Marie Van Driel
went to the triathlon workshop because
they wanted to sign up for the 2010 tri-
athlon because entries were done for
2009. Sumner said there were approxi-
mately 20 women at the workshop and
they were going around the room telling
the others how many triathlons they had
done.
“It got to me and I was like ‘I’m here
because I’m a wannabe, I wannabe like
you guys,” said Sumner.
Deanne Jabs, the race director, told
her she didn’t have to be a wannabe any-
more and that she and Van Driel would
be able to take part in the 2009 triathlon
after all. Both women had only a week
to prepare, and the workshop taught
them what to do and not do during the
events.
“It was truly one of the most empow-
ering experiences of my life. It was such
an amazing experience,” said Sumner.
Since last year’s triathlon Sumner and
Van Driel have continued to train for this
years events.
“We’ve done boot camp three times a
week and all kinds of things and we’ve
become pretty fit because neither of us
was very fit a year ago,” said Sumner.
“I’ve had to work pretty hard because
things just aren’t as easy when you’re 40.
I wish I’d discovered this when I was 20.
But better to discover it late than not at
all.”

This year on August 15, five staff mem-
bers from Westmount Elementary took
part in the triathlon. Sumner said the
amount of support they gave each other
was wonderful. She also gushed about
Deanne and what the experience has
done for her.
“I just can’t speak highly enough of
Deanne, I went to her at the banquet and
told her she has truly changed my life.”
Marian Cook also took part in the tri-
athlon and found it to be a great experi-
ence.
“It was a great event, well organized
and a great experience. Special thanks
needs to be extended to all the volun-
teers and that “special little person” on
the run route who was respectfully ask-
ing the participants if they wanted to
be sprayed with water. What a fantastic
treat,” said Cook.
Since competing in her first triathlon,
Sumner has taken part in every one she
possibly can. It’s something she plans to
continue doing as long as she can, and
she compared the anticipation of this
year’s triathlon to Christmas.
“For me it was like Christmas day, I
had been looking forward to it since last
year. I knew last year I was going to reg-
ister for this year. And it was, it was like
Christmas, it was just fun from the min-
ute I woke up. I’m kind of sad because
that was what I was looking forward to
most this summer and now it’s over,”
said Sumner.
She managed to shave 15 minutes off
of her time from last year, finishing in an
hour and 45 minutes. She said it doesn’t
matter if you’re an ironman competitor
or a beginner; the Strathmore Women’s
Triathlon fits everybody.

Empowerment is what it’s all about,
at least according to Deanne Jabs, race
director for the Strathmore Women’s
Triathlon. On August 15, 370 women
gathered together to take part in the
eighth annual triathlon.
“Its not really a race, we call it more
of an empowering event, because it’s
really empowering to finish a triath-
lon,” said Jabs.
“It’s to encourage women, because
women are often intimidated by events
that have a lot of men. It’s nice to have
a women’s only environment, where
they are not intimidated by competi-
tive men.”
The women’s triathlon is not a com-
petitive event according to Jabs; the
main goal is crossing the finish line.
The women were mainly from Cal-
gary and surrounding Towns, with one
woman coming in from Winnipeg to
take part.
“We started it here because this is a
beautiful location, a great biking area
and its nice to have it in a small com-
munity,” said Jabs.
The triathlon started with a 500m
swim, then a 20-kilometre bike ride
followed by a five-kilometre run. Some
of the women walk the five kilometres
instead of running.
“You don’t want to have people
swimming last just in case someone
drowns after being tired from biking
and running,” said Jabs. “No one has
ever drowned, but you just look at
something like a swim (first) and bik-
ing is the next highest risk of the three
and then the run.”

Participants ranged from ages 16 to
63. This year a relay was introduced,
which had a 10-year-old swimming in
it. Jabs said the relay was exciting be-
cause all of the relay participants went
head to head. For those doing the tri-
athlon, there were different groups
who went at different times. When
one swimmer exited the pool another
would jump in so that it was a contin-
uous feed. The route changed a little
this year to incorporate some of the
new bike paths.
“The reason I put this event on, is
because my life has totally changed
from triathlon and I want everybody to
have that feeling. It’s very empowering
and very gratifying,” said Jabs. She and
her volunteers do not participate in
the Strathmore triathlon, but she said
she does take part in others.
For over half of the participants, this
was their first triathlon. Jabs said some
women may train all year but many are
at home with kids or busy with work,
and they fit in workouts and training
where they can.
“We have yet to have someone who
couldn’t finish. Most people finish and
go ‘wow I did it’. Most people surprise
themselves that they can actually do
it,” said Jabs.
Water and sports drinks were pro-
vided to participants to help keep
them hydrated and after the last wom-
en crossed the line there was a ban-
quet. In the past all the women who
took part were given a flower finisher
medal. This year Jabs provided all of
the women with the medal in the form
of a charm, so they can wear them in-
stead of tucking a medal away into a
drawer.
