First Grade News
October 2017
Math
We will finish up Topic 2 in our Envisions
Math Curriculum, adding and subtracting
fluently. Students will take the Topic 2
assessment to determine if they have
mastered the skills for this topic. We will
then begin Topic 3 in Envisions, titled
Addition facts to 20: Use strategies.
Students will learn multiple strategies for
adding to 20.
Science and Social Studies
In Science, we will finish studying force and
motion, which includes push, pull, and magnets.
We will also use science topics about apples
and seasons to learn how to read and
understand nonfiction text features.
In Social Studies, we will begin studying
maps, the atlas, and globes. We will also be
learning about our neighborhood by studying
our class, school, and families.

Workday
October 31st Kindness week begins. Field Trip
to see The Snowy Day play at the theater
Writers Workshop
We are continuing our first Writers
Workshop unit of study titled Small
Moments. Students will learn how to write
personal narratives in which they recount two
or more appropriately sequenced events,
include some details regarding what
happened, use correct sequencing words to
signal event order, and provide some sense of
closure.
Literacy
We will continue to improve literacy skills with
our Shared Reading, Phonics, Interactive Read
Aloud, and Readers Workshop lessons. The
focus of instruction will be on skills to figure
out tricky/unknown words, how to retell a
fiction story accurately, how ask and answer
questions about a nonfiction text, how to
decode unknown words, how to segment and
spell words using knowledge of letter chunks
and sounds, and lastly daily fluency practice to
build reading fluency. Keep in mind the goal for
first grade students by January is to fluently
read 23 words per minute and read on a Level G
or H.
Reminders
Agenda - Please make sure that you check and
sign your childs agenda book each night.
Thursday Folders - Please check, sign, and
return folders as soon as you can.
Math HW Comes home Monday, return Friday
Reading Homework-Please make sure your child
is reading 15-20 minutes a night and write/log
in the agendas (Monday Thursday).
Parent Conferences Conferences are taking
place this month. Make sure you have scheduled
one with your childs teacher.
