APPLIED RHEOLOGY SEMINAR

Date and Time: June 16-June 17, 2016 --- 8:30 AM-4:30 PM
Location: Coanda Research and Development Corporation
401-6741 Cariboo Rd
Burnaby, BC, Canada, V3N 4A3

Anton Paar and Coanda Research organize an intensive 2-day course on Applied Rheology.
The Course will be taught by Thomas Mezger Ing. and Dr. Babak Derakhshandeh.

The Applied Rheology course consists of an intensive 2-day program delivered by Anton Paar
and Coanda Research and Development Corporation. This course is designed to provide an
understanding of the rheology fundamentals, different measurement techniques, interpretation
of the data, and applications of rheology in problem solving. Lectures including case studies and
examples drawn from industrial practice, combined with informal discussion periods and hands-
on experiments will cover the key elements of the subject.
By the end of this course you will:

Develop a basic understanding of the principles of rheology

Learn how to conduct rheological characterization of different complex fluids
Learn how to analyze and interpret the rheological data
Learn how to use rheology to formulate products and to design processes
Learn how to operate rotational rheometers
Become familiar with custom made rheometers and techniques used for characterization
of large particulate systems
Who will benefit: Scientists, engineers, chemists, laboratory technicians, and graduate students
involved in research, development, processing and quality control in the oil and gas,
pharmaceutical, polymer, paint, adhesives & sealants, cosmetics, and food industries.

The Instructors:
Mr. Thomas Mezger completed a degree in Chemical Engineering at
Stuttgart University, Germany. He has gained a wealth of experience in the
field of practical rheology during his years with rheometer manufactures
Contraves, Physica and Anton Paar. For over ten years, Mr. Mezger has
held seminars for employees of companies and institutes from a wide range
of technical branches.

As a result of these experiences, Das Rheologie-Handbuch (in German

language) came into existence in 2000 and was published in English in
2002. Now in its fourth edition, the Rheology Handbook has been used by numerous rheologists
around the world.

Given that rheological characterization has become very popular by various industries in the last
decade, Thomas has recently published the Applied Rheology Handbook aiming at providing
the basics of practical rheology for applications in the relevant industries.

Dr. Babak Derakhshandeh received his Ph.D. from the University of British
Columbia, Canada. Babak has more than 10 years of experience in
rheological characterization and fluid dynamics studies of complex fluids
and is the author of several peer-reviewed scientific publications,
conference papers, and technical reports.

Babak is currently a Lead Professional Scientist at Coanda Research and

Development Corporation where he has been leading projects focused on
the fluid dynamics studies of industrial processes. During past few years,
Babak has successfully executed research programs involving non-Newtonian fluids including
fiber suspensions, mine tailings, food stuffs, polymer solutions and melts, and complex mixtures
involving chemical reactions. In addition to research, Dr. Derakhshandeh has been actively
involved in teaching engineering courses at university as well as industrial courses and
workshops on rheology of non-Newtonian fluids for various industries. He is an active member
of the Society of Rheology and the Canadian Society of Rheology.
